How is Windows installed, a vm or Boot Camp? You can't boot XP from an external drive.

You can't direct install Windows XP onto your Mac, only older Mac's with Snow Leopard.

New Mac's only support Windows Vista, 7 and 8 in BootCamp (direct install)

That XP installer is likely for PC's, not Mac's.

If you want to install XP, you use a virtual machine program as so as it will pretend to be a PC.

Install Windows or Linux into VirtualBox

Windows in BootCamp or Virtual Machine?

I just got this macbook pro a few days ago, the saleman told me I could clone my XP machine to an external drive and then run it from there.  I cloned it but when I try to run it I get a message "512k of low memory is required there is only 352K available.

You can install XP in a virtual machine like Parallels, Fusion, or VirtualBox. VirtualBox is free.

The salesman was feeding you a line of BS. First off no Windows operating system will install or boot from an external drive except Windows 8 and that take a special install if it onto an external drive.

Second if your Win XP install was from a major manufacturers computer like HP, Dell or others it is TIED to that make of computer and can not be installed or run on any other brand computer.

    You can't.

    Cloned it with what?

    Run it how?

Even if you somehow managed to do so and run XP basic, there is no hardware drivers for XP to work with the newer Macs.

No Wifi, no video graphics, no full screen, etc. etc.
