Q: How to get label colors back on Maverick?

I realize "tabs" took it's place but all my business files are predicated on a carefully organized color file system. This was an awful decision for some of us. Any new apps to fill the void?

I really don't like these new tags either. It will not allow me to change some tags on folders. I deleted my green tag and now its gone forever, can't get it back and can't add it.

And just where is this little colored dot in list view? I can't find it all... ... I just want to see the tagged files in one folder. This totally *****.

    Take a deep breath, relax....

In list view, right click the header, select Tags:

Then click the Tags header to sort.

Are you only looking for a way to color the Folder icon?

If so, see Eric's suggestions: Re: How to get label colors back on Maverick?

That would be nice too but no. I right clicked the tag and clicked delete. Colour gone. It now does not offer green in the tag area.

You can remove by dragging out of Favorites

If this is the area that you deleted the Tag by right-clicking, then

    Create a new Tag:

Right Click the Folder, and select Tags...

Then Add back Green, and go back to Finder->Preferences->Tags, click the O and select the color Green

I thoroughly agree withe Tracy E. The colored lines were a great visual aid in allowing me to navigate through multiple folder hierarchies very efficiently. The colored dots do not provide that level of usability.

    awesome everyone should send feedback.

ALSO, I just contacted BinaryAge support (makers of TotalFinder) and was told that they are considering adding the option to restore labels too, though they have some more pressing stuff to fix for Mavericks first. It would be a nice option since TotalFinder is $18 rather than PathFinder's $40, and you also get the option to restore the colorful sidebar icons.. which is a plus for me. Seems like Apple is on a mission to make everything the same shade of light grey/blue.

This is What ended up working for me to solve the problem.

Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences folder and trash these files:

    com.apple.finder.plist

    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist

Then, restart, or log out and in again.

(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

    I'm with this.

I have trouble working with these new tag dots, and having some colour preception problems, too, would really want to see the colour labels in Finder again without any third party apps.

It is incredibly cumbersome to find things now, compared to the obvious coloured lines that were in Finder before. I myself cannot distinguish between some differently coloured dots. The volume is just too small.

I have sent feedback to Apple.

Thanks Eric - very helpful. Only wish the color included the names, but this is far superior to the current Mavericks tags. Thanks again.

None of the colored folder apps are really what I want. Like the rest of you, I just want the colored labels back. I followed cdnuser's tip above of trashing the plists but that didn't work either. Come on, developers, there's work for you here!

I think dcnuser's advice was for people who may have inadvertently trashed a tag.  It wasn't a solution for the highlighting problem.

Have also just submitted feedback to Apple.  I find their current 'minimalist' approach to user interaction to be infuriating.  It's not just the tags - the new version of Pages is horrible for the power user due to a scale back of functionality in favour of their minamilist concept of UI design.  Shelling out $40 on software just so that a visual cue is placed back into the OS is letting Apple off lightly.

Right - I didn't realize that, thanks! I agree with you regarding Apple. They seem, for obvious reasons, to be concentrating on mobile devices and all the song and dance about Mavericks was really to enable better interactivity between the Mac and mobiles. Fine, but don't do away with a perfectly good app. I'll write as well - if enough of us do, it might do some good.

Obviously, but by all means, hijack the thread to complain about the removal of labels.
