Q: Mybook studio raid 0, empty after installing Mavericks

After installing Mavericks, my WD My Book Studio II connected by firewire, does not contain any files. It is a raid 0, after using the operating system while I wonder if I could use time machine to which I said no.

In this hard drive I keep my most precious files.

Forgive the level of English, I'm Spanish and I write through a translator.

A greeting and thanks.

Received following from Wd so happy they are working on it as well as Apple.

    =======================================

Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support.  My name is Mallet.

I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. The WD Software and the Mac 10.9 Mavericks operating system is currently in conflict base on the new files system configuration that was enact for a better perception of the Mavericks. At this point, I recommend you to remove the WD Smartware, WD RAID Manager and WD Drive manager for data protection purposes.

Please connect the drive to a different Mac computer that has the previous OSx or lower for more verification while connecting the external drive to another USB port or using different USB cable to access your files. Please keep me update for more information on this process.

If you have any further questions, please reply to this email and we will be happy to assist you further.

    Sincerely,

    Mallet

Anyway i connected my mybook studio to the old mac using usb instead of firewire but still shows zero files.

Just trying to keep everyone informed as i would like to be.

Yes, ...contrary to the email from WD, .........once corruption occurs, data recovery will have to be done, merely taking the corrupted drive to a NON-Mavericks Mac will not "reverse damage" done to same.

There are several reports of corruption with great success of recovery using Techtool Pro 7

    http://www.micromat.com/products/techtool-pro

    The other being Disk Warrior

Could this be a power related issue? I have a FW audio interface daisy-chained via a WD drive, the interface has had noise coming from the drive through the input channels,  this doesn't happen if connected directly.

Come on Apple, give us an open timeline on this, user data > corporate image/pr practices

More details as requested by Hexidy: actually it was the same MacBook -- I use a cable with FW800 connection at one end and FW400 at the other, which (up until now) has never caused any issues (except of course only running at 400 ).

The MacBook was running Snow Leopard until last week. So much in Lion had put me off, but I finally upgraded due to some apps (including Lightroom) not playing any more.

    The exact drives are:

A WD My Book Studio II with a model number WD20000H2Q-00 on the case and cardboard box. But that doesn't show up on WD's website -- when I registered with the serial number it was identified as model WDH2Q20000!

And a Seagate FreeAgent FW (1TB) silver model, which is running as a pure Time Machine with no problem so far.

I'd installed the WD RAID / drive manager software. I initially installed the TURBO+ driver that came with it too, but since there was absolutely no performance increase, I uninstalled that latter part literally a year ago, with no ill effects at the time.

Sadly, while dotting those i's as you mentioned, I have to inject one more variable. I recently (post-Mavericks) upgraded the internal main HD from the original Hitachi 120GB to a Toshiba 500GB -- using CarbonCopyCloner. I guess there's a chance something happened to force changes to all local partition tables or catalogues, but it seems unlikely given this problem is so widespread.

Hope something in here may help with the head-scratching

    Interesting development here.

Plugged in another WD external harddrive (non RAID), which was serving as my time machine, and it is totally wiped and renamed "MyBook".

It seems like if you've ever had WD drive Manager installed on your computer, it can affect any and all harddrives connected to it.

    Beware!

To all who have this problem:

Thanks for the warning. I have 4 Studio II drives and 2 Mac-formatted "black" Mirror drives (all 2 TB, Raid 1, used with Time Machine) and just wanted to upgrade to Mavericks when I read this thread.

    Questions:

    1. Could it be that it's firmware version dependent? (Which version do you have on your drives?)

I had problems updating the firmware:

Before installing Mac OS Mavericks I wanted to upgrade the firmware of my My Book Studio Edition II drives. I followed all instructions, but when running  WDFirmwareUpdater.app I got the message:

The operation couldn’t be completed. (NSURLErrorDomain error -3003.)

But I could continue the firmware upgrade, so I tried it. Unfortunatel in the end I got the message:

    Firmware update failed

Unable to find device to update. Check your cable connection, and then run
    WD Firmware Updater again.
Click Exit, and then run the WD Firmware Updater again.

    Repeating didn't help.

BTW: 3 things were not clear: During the upgrade:

    - should WD Drive Manager be running (or quit?)

    - should the drive be mounted (or ejected?)

    - should the drive be on (or switched off?)

Where can I show/see which firmware version is currently installed?

    2. When you encountered the problem, did you try to backup to your drive, when there was already a backup on it? For example previously used by Time Machine under Mountain Lion and now tried to continue to use it under Mavericks? Or did you use a "fresh", empty drive?

BTW Under http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=114&sid=62&lang=en the WD Drive Manager v2.2.7 with WD RAID Manager Version 1.1.4 of 09 October 2012 has been removed by WD. It claimed that it's compatible with Mac OS 10.9! See the screenshot:

    compatible.png

    It's still in Google Cache:

I have a 1 TB OWC Mercury Elite Pro external which I use for backup. I have the same problem. Earlier this evening, I tried to retreive a bachup of iMovie files and disscovered that all I could see using Time Machine was what I could see looking at current files on my main internal hard drive. I'm unsure what drive OWC actually uses inside the case. I set it up over 6 years ago and believe I just used OS X Disk Utility to format it.

Does anyone know what external drive will work with Maverics?

Does anyone know what external drive will work with Maverics?

    as long as:

    1. no RAID

    2. no control software used (i.e. WD)

    3. no firewire or thunderbolt (sleep issue)

they all will (WD, Seagate, Toshiba, Hitachi)

    USB only, formatting only

Ive still seen no evidence proving any certainty that a simplex bare USB external HD will have an issue... if 1, 2, 3 are not present.

There are some reports of simplex USB drives affected, but its not absolutely certain that #2 isnt present.

Ive tested a pile of USB HD and bare docked drives, and been testing 4 drives for days now,....no issues, copied and moved files, and made backups, still no occurances

When you say "1. No Raid", do you mean "Do not use raid" or drive "Cannot be Raid capable" even if not used.

Although I am currently using Firewire 800, I could use USB 2. Would that work.

    Thank you very much!

I just ran Disk Utility "Verify drive" an message returned said the drive appeared to be OK. I tried Time Machine again and it now works normally again. My files are readable back to August 2012. Very weird behaviour but I'm happy to get the files back,

meaning do not USE RAID. (at this time)

RAID as setup by Disk Utility MAY be ok, but that is absolutely NOT determined yet.

Firewire and Thunderbolt (unknown if all) are experiencing a mild occurrence of not going to sleep,... which left to linger could cause overheating and HD failure.

    PlotinusVeritas,

Can you tell me how I can be certain that I removed the WD software completely from my Mac?

When I search using Finder, it doesn't find any file which could be from WD. Is their a other way of making sure I have removed everything?

I searched the activity monitor for the mentioned processes, none to be found.

In Terminal I did what is listed below.

I guess I am "clean" now?

    Again thanks for your help

Yay, now it hit me, too. Literally over night.

Mavericks has been running fine for a week, no data loss. This morning, though, EVERY external drive I now connect (USB or FireWire) shows up as empty: LaCies, WDs, Toshiba, Hitachi and Seagate USB drives, RAID or no RAID – all are “emptied” once connected to my 10.9 Mac.

I don’t have any WD software installed on this Mac, no SmartWare, no drivers. I removed them prior to upgrading to Mavericks due to the WD press release.

Even the Time Machine HDD (FireWire) which has been happily in use for a week on Mavericks now suddenly shows up as a “New Drive”. Backup drives which I have been using data from only yesterday: “Empty” today. The only data I still can access on my Mavericks Mac is data stored on the NAS (not directly connected to the Mac).

Connecting an external drive to a Lion backup Mac, everything’s there. Plugging them in on my Mavericks Mac, they show up as empty. Connecting them to the Lion backup Mac again, afterwards, they show up as empty, too.

All drives were formated with HFS+ (non-case-sensitive, journaled).

My guess is Mavericks hoses the partition tables. What I don’t understand is why this only happened one week in – I was working with my main external drive on my Mavericks Mac only yesterday. Today: Everything seems to be gone.

    Cheers,

    -Sascha
