Nov 3, 2013 2:38 AM in response to Zydasby ds store,Install Windows or Linux into VirtualBox
Have tried to create Ubuntu and Fedora VMs using Virtualbox...no success. With Ubuntu installation hangs on restart. With Fedora...critical error...
It takes some trial and effort to install Linux, even into virtual machine programs.
One has to carefully examine the operating system requirements, download the right version and configure the virtual machine wizard accordingly or with slightly better than the minimal requirements for RAM and drive space.
I haven't installed either, but have done so with other distros and it's try, try again sort of thing as your learning about the complexities of how computers operate and he requirements of each distro.
Some may need direct acess to hardware, which isn't available in virtual machine programs
I will give those a try, however it will be quite a few days before I can give a step by step instructions.
I'd suggest you instead try Linux Mint, it's the easiest of them all to install.
Do NOT direct install Linux onto a Mac, only into a virtual machine program.

Nov 3, 2013 3:18 AM in response to ds storeby Zydas,Thanks for the advice.
I initially tried the latest VirtualBox 32-bit download...I'm running a 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 - 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 with Mac OS X. VirtualBox don't give any guidance re what build to use. I tried an earlier build with no success.
I'll try Linux Mint and report back....

Nov 3, 2013 7:39 AM in response to Zydasby BobTheFisherman,You have to do some research. Ubuntu and other distributions work well with VirtualBox but you have to understand the selections you are making when installing Linux. Search Google and understand the installation procedure and what selections to make. Trying different distributions will not help you since all distributions work. Your issue is likely that you are not doing the installation correctly.

Nov 18, 2013 3:38 AM in response to BobTheFishermanby Zydas,Hello, and Thx. Yes, I did research before I started - Youtube etc.
I have now managed to get it working, by using a mixture of what I researched - experimenting.
- I used an older version of Ubuntu - 11.04 for 32-bit machines
- I increased processors to 2
- I didn't install tools during creation of VM
Anyway - working now and thanks for the advice...

Nov 18, 2013 3:47 AM in response to Zydasby LowLuster,Not sure what the other poster is talking about with trouble installing Linux into a virtual machine but I disagree. It is very simple to install most any version of Linux into any one of the 3 virtual machine software programs available for OS X.
As to installing Linux natively on the Mac hardware that is something totally different.
