I'm having the exact same issue with the upgraded iMovie. The inability to sort events by date is inexplicable and is a giant step backwards. This is absolutely critical to my workflow, and until it's fixed, I'll be using the old version.

how can you do that, going back to the old copy.

    From iMovie Help:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6012

In particular, see the last sentence in that Help topic. As Stephen said, iMovie '11 (that's version 9) is retained in your Applications folder and renamed to include it's last updated version number. You can still open all of your original projects and events within that older version. Updating them in iMovie 10 will not change the original files.

This version of iMovie is terrible.  Definitely needs folders to sort by year.  I also found that when I upgraded projects it upgraded them to today's date - NOT what I wanted at all.  Going to go back to the old version.  This is truly disastrous.

How do you go back to the previous version?  Will this work since on the upgrade the movies went through an updgraded process?

I went back to iMovie 9 after downloading iMovie 10.  However, my  iMovie 9 events now has dupicate listings of every movie!!  Why is this?

Also of note, when I downloaded iMovie 10, it made two libraries (imovie library 1, and 2) of my movies...the same content in both.  Why?

    Please help!

Thankfully I dont have duplicate lists in iMovie 9, but I do have Library and Library 1 in iMovie 10.  I'm simply going to ignore iMovie 10 until this is sorted.

That's the advice I was given at my local Apple Shop too.  Very irritating.

I intended to create a cronological video of my daughter's first year of life to hand out to family over the holidays (As I did with my son in a previous version of iMovie), but like the inability to sort events by date makes this task impossible. Sure, you can show event clips by day and date and figure it out, but that's impossibly inefficient.

I am way behind in editing videod events, as I have about 3 years worth of events to edit, tidy up and make into projects.  For me the new version is actually almost unworkable, so I have no option but to continue with the old version.

For once the Apple mantra should be...  "It just disny work"  (apologies for the Scottish dialect...)

Quick reminder that the iMovie team will never read these discussion threads, and the only way they'll know that we care about this issue is if we all submit feedback through the official channel. It only takes a minute, and really does help guide their decision-making for future updates.

    Hi all,

I too was horrified by the lack of sorting events by date or year. However I was quite lucky in that I already had my movies grouped in events by month. So I spent a good while renaming all my events from 'November 2012' to '2012-11 - November' etc.

I have to to say that it's worth doing this as one you start using the new imovie you wing want to go back! It is massively faster to use. Importing clips takes hardly any time and you can already scab them as they are importing.

Most featured that appear lost are still there but hidden away.

I carried on using imovie 9 for a while and thought I would give imovie 10 another go. I have now deleted all my imovie 9 files as there is no way I would go back!

    Cheers

    Ben

same complaint here.  i'm sticking with the older version of imovie until apple comes up with a solution to the events issue.  i much prefer seeing all my video in chronilogical order of when they were filmed, not imported...year by year.  please fix this apple.....quick!!!

I really like the direction they're going with the interface on iMovie 10, but like so many others my videos also cannot be organized by date. Of course, this makes finding a specific video from seven years ago, for example, far too time consuming. So, I've also gone back to version 9. I don't like it either, but it's the only way I can navigate through my videos. I don't understand why, when I choose the Sort by > Date function nothing happens. I hope this gets fixed.

They updated iMovie yesterday to 10.0.1, but it still doesn't solve this issue. Maybe 10.0.2 will? It doesn't seem like a major technological challenge. iPhoto has been handling this correctly since, well, forever. Just copy that code.

Thanks Stephen!!! I would never have thought of looking in the application folder for the previuos version. 10 out of 10 as far as I'm concerned. I was looking to go out and buy a video editing suite I am so disgusted by Apple, this is my second major critisism of them to date. I am rapidly going off Apple.
