Aperture 3.5 Grey screen

Grey screen in Viewer mode...

Good morning to all,



I have Imac with 10.9 and aperture 3.5

also Nik, Photoshop, DXO  and LR4.


Last night, I took a picture from Aperture to " NIK HDR efex Pro 2", did a few things with it and back to aperture.


then.... from the browser  to Viewer..... no picture , just a grey screen.



I opened a new catalog, transferred one project.....same thing.


I am randomly getting a grey screen in Viewer mode with only the metadata showing across the bottom.

When I switch to Bowser mode I can see all the thumbnail images once again but back to grey screen when I return to Viewer mode.

The Loupe shows the image inside of itself but grey around in Viewer mode.

Quitting and restarting Aperture let's me once again sees the images in Viewer mode till it happens the next time and then I have to restart again.

Any suggestions?

    Hello Ray,


    I have the same problem but in my case the Viewer does not display the images regardless of whether I run them through NIK or another plug in use. It happens with new photos imported into Aperture, as well.


    I quit and relaunch Aperture and it works for about 3 pix and then I get the gray screen; relaunch, try again. Works for a few, then the same thing. This is really a pain.


    It happens with Referenced as well as Managed files. Thank you for any ideas about how to fix.

    Those articles are incorrect, as it is happening to me with Nik Color Efex 2, not the HDR module.

    I had no Viewer problems using NIK plug-ins with 3.4.5. Also, the Viewer issue occurs even on newly-imported photos that have not been run through NIK.

    I think to go back to 3.4.5 would require that you have the 3.4.5 library available. I have mine thanks to Time Machine, but I did a lot of additional work in 3.5 and that work would be lost.


    Instead, I am thinking of making the move to Lightroom. It has a lot more features than Aperture and all my photography friends are using it. I will still lose all of the work I did on 3.5, but at least I'll have a solid application going forward.


    Maybe we'll hear something soon from Apple.

    Have you contacted Nik/Google (or whoever is running the show over there now)?


    The developer version of the software has been out long enough for any company truly interested in supporting the platform to have made whatever changes needed to be made and to test it out well in advance of the release of Mavericks and Aperture 3.5.


    There is no reason to expect any word from Apple, though there might be one. The onus to fix ths fails on the developer.

    I contacted NIK yesterday and received an email link today to NIK for Aperture 3.5. The caveat in the email says it is not officially sanctioned for Mavericks yet, however, and installing it did not solve the problem for me. I was not convinced that it was a NIK, problem, though, until I uninstalled NIK. Now Aperture works fine.

    Here is the reply from NIK received a few minutes ago:

    Unfortunately, the issue you are currently encountering is because of the incompatibility of Mavericks OS X 10.9. The Nik Collection by Google has not yet been made compatible. As I outlined in my last email to you, when it is compatible, it will be listed on our website. Our developers are currently working on making the necessary adjustments for the Nik Collection to work with the latest version of OS X and Apple Aperture. Again, I apologize for the inconvenience, and thank you for your patience while we resolve this matter.


    If you have any further questions, please reply to this email or visit to call our Customer Service Department Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 5:00 pm PST.

    So, I guess I'll wait. At least they are working on the issue.

    I had a lengthy discussion with a Nik rep on this issue. As Nik is a third party to Apple, they had no opportunity to beta-test Mavericks/Aperture 3.5 compatibility before the launch. They are working on addressing/resolving currently and when I pressed for a time frame (weeks or months), was informed it would most likely be a few weeks. I was also told there will be no blast when this happens. It's on us users to stay current with the manufacturer.


    I have experienced similar symptoms across the whole collection and like all of us, was quite disturbed/concerned as to the source/cause of the problem. This thread allowed me to have the aforementioned specific discussion with the rep (thanks). The rep further assured me upon my pressing that they are fullly committed to the Aperture (and pro) community. I appreciate that Nik is still a company where you can speak directly to a human and get personal technical/customer service attention, and that is unchanged since the Goodle acquisition. The collection is an excellent product.


    That said, I am curious whether anyone on this thread has experienced the particular display problems described in this other thread -, as I've been delaing with a double whammy. I am thinking this is also a result of the Nik installation, but may also be a video card compatibility issue (that I have already addressed).

    I have noticed the same grey window problem after using Silver Efex. I checked if I had the latest version installed and not. I then downloaded the latest trial version and now have version 2.100. It seems to be alot better. As for HDR Efex Pro, it is still plagued with the same problem.
