yes, you can back it up to an external HD you have connected to your Imac....however if you have 2 backups on that 1 drive, thats a disaster waiting to happen, the drive goes, everything goes.
By "floater" drive, you mean a SECOND drive,....well, you want as many "floaters" as you can afford to buy, period
You should purchase a nice 1TB external USB HD for $69

When I say floater I mean a hard drive and cables I would need to store somewhere until I need them.
I have an empty partition on my iMac just no desktop space. How do I setup my iMac so the MB Air can see the drive?
