Displayport 1.2

Which version of displayport does the new MacBook Pro Retina support? Does anyone know? My company is about to get into iOS devices and I'll be the lead developer for the push. I'll be getting a Mac of some flavor to replace my current workstation, and my preference is for a MacBook Pro.

I want to keep my 3 monitor setup without having to plug and unplug a done of cables and want some kind of dock or hub or something to use for my peripherals. I know I could use Thunderbolt and daisychain Apple's displays, but the powers that be would not be amused at the price tag. Will the new Mac's that were released with Thunderbolt 2 support Displayport 1.2's MST function so I could use a hub or daisy chain?

An example of an MST hub: http://www.accellcables.com/K088B-003B.html

And if anyone knows of a thunderbolt hub or docking station that would support 3 monitors plus peripherals, please point it out. I know about the horizontal dock being worked on by Hengedocks, and that may be the way I go. That's assuming they start shipping them anytime soon.

With the MacBook Pro line, Apple has limited the DisplayPort output to two monitors. Weather you use two separate thunderbolt to dp adapters or have two thunderbolt monitors daisy-chained. Your hub would likely work but the notebook will only allow for two dp links. On another note you may still connect a 3rd display via the built in HDMI port. For a mass monitor setup you should wait for the new Mac Pro which supports 3 UHD (4K) displays.

I just tried my October 2013 Macbook Pro with Retina Display with an Asus PQ321Q in MST mode. Sadly, the Macbook only sends one stream, filling only half the monitor. I'd expect the same behavior with a hub (driving only one display).

So yeah, wait for the Mac Pro. I'll be returning my new MBPR and doing the same. 😟

Don't know what to tell you except that it doesn't work. Brand new, Haswell, 15" MBPR 2013 with top-end graphics - only first monitor recognized.

While the hardware (thunderbolt 2 controller) may support it, the firmware, drivers, and OS don't.

Update:

I installed Windows 8.1, and it works! So the Late 2013 15" Macbook Pro Retina (with GeForce 750M) is capable of driving multiple displays via DisplayPort 1.2 MST.

However, OS X Mavericks is not.

Hopefully a software update acompanying the release of the new Mac Pro will enable support in OS X as well.

Bagellord, I have a brand new Mac Pro (late 2013, cylinder) and Mavericks 10.9.1. The OS does not support DisplayPort 1.2. I have a DP 1.2 monitor (LG 29" Ultrawide), and the monitor functions properly while set to DP 1.2 mode under Windows 8.1, but not under Mavericks. So that indicates to me that the hardware (Mac Pro) and Windows 8.1 support it, but 10.9.1 does not. Shame.

Do we know if 10.9.3 will do the job for daisy-chaining monitors? I have a nMP and dual Dell U2414H monitors that work just fine as long as each is plugged into its own Thunderbolt2 port. I'd like to have one daisy-chained to the other. Everything is Displayport 1.2 and ready to go.

Apple are proving surprisingly stupid over supporting high-end standards, for example they still do not support 10bit video even though Adobe do in their software (it just does not work thanks to Apple) and Windows has for ages. However 10.9.3 is supposed to improve support for 4K displays and this might imply better support for DisplayPort 1.2.

(It is stupid because graphics/video professionals who want these features used to be Apple's favorite customers and exactly the people who would be expected to buy the new Mac Pro.)

It is now possible for anyone to register for a free beta-test of Mavericks 10.9.3 so nothing is stopping you from doing this and trying it yourself. If it still does not work you could then give Apple a piece of your mind useful feedback regarding this. 🙂
