Q: Messages Not Working in Mavericks 10.9

Hi there,

Anyone else having this problem?   My Messages is just not working.  I am logged in.   It lets me type a message, but then it just sits there and a few minutes later I get the red circle/ "!" saying it didn't go through.  I've tried logging in and out of Messages.  Restarting the computer of course.  Nothing.  I'm stuck.  I can't find another post on this so anyone else having this issue?

Oh, I should add everything is working on my iphone and ipad.  I get imessages no problem.  The only problem is on my laptop (2013 macbook pro with retina display).  Troubleshooting are welcome - especially any way to reset or reinstall messages to get it working again.

    Thanks!

    Hi,

Do you use a second display with this Mac ?

If so check System Preferences > Displays have them in the right order.

Are you having issues with other Apple Apps ?

FaceTime, App Store, Game Centre ?

Nope - I don't use a second display.  All other programs and icloud items work just fine.  Its just Messages.

    HI,

    Try a Safe Boot

Check the System Preferences > Security an Privacy > Firewall is allowing Messages and IMAgent if it is On.

(in the Options Button > "Allow Signed Software" and both items should be in the List)

Thanks for these ideas.  I don't have the firewall on.  I did a safe boot - but it did not solve the problem.  So, I am still stuck.

I am in the same boat as you I think. No iMessage since upgrading my 2012 iMac to Mavericks today. I've tried everything I could find in every thread here and elsewhere. iMessage works fine on my 2013 Macbook Air that I upgraded last week, and it DOES work from my guest account, so it must be a user issue, but I've deleted all of the plist files over and over again.

I am having the same problem as well. I cannot send or recieve messages. I created a test account, and it seemed to work there. I have tried all of the above, as well as reinstalling Mavericks. Any other suggestions?

Yes, all my "tests" look the same!   Seems like we are having the same problem - imessage stops working on a computer only but continues to work on other devices.

Too bad a Mavericks re-install didn't help.  I was wondering if I should do that.  I guess I'll hold off.

After spending a couple hours just trying anything and everything, I am now getting the message:

    "Could not sign into iMessage

Could not sign in. Please check your network connection and try again."

I can't find anything anywhere that is a solution to this problem.

keep throwing out ideas!  this issue is really annoying.

Well I was able to log back in finally (no network errors) but iMessages still don't send, and I get the same console message (back to square one). The only thing I haven't tried is going into safe mode, because my iMac won't go into safe mode. I hold shift, the progress bar comes up under the apple logo and gear, then after it's is done loading, it reboots.

I'm about to give up on this one and just live with it and hope it works in 10.9.1

Pretty ridiculous if you ask me. Shouldn't Apple provide some kind of reset switch for iMessage settings (or any settings really) to start from scratch is something is corrupted?

Had the same problem. But now working after making a new admin login. Switching to the new admin. Change the name of the 'home' folder to something different. Make a new admin login with that exact name. It will ask if you want the new admin linked to the home folder that already exists. Switch to the other users and change the account to standard not admin. Switch back to new account. Restart and then after restart delete the other users.

Tried your solution of setting up a new admin, changing the home folder of the old user, making a new admin with that username, using the old folder as its folder, and logging in as that user, and STILL can't send iMessages. In the process lost all of my settings for everything else, so I'm slightly annoyed at this point.
