Q: Unable to toggle Snapping, Skimming etc

I seem to have lost the ability to toggle snapping, skimming etc on and off.

This is very annoying.

Whether I use keyboard shortcuts, the mouse to click the toolbar icons, or select them in "View" they stay on all the time.

Trashed prefs, rebooted Mac, to no avail.

Any ideas anyone?

Andy

Thanks Russ - I don't have much faith in those apps (maybe they've improved of late though).

Understand the reluctance (although my OnyX experiencw has actually been quite decent over time).

    Same issue here.

I tried the string "defaults delete com.apple.FinalCut" in the terminal and also used Onyx for cleaning caches etc... Still the same.

The only way to be able to toggle Snapping and Skimming on and off again is to create a new user!

All my keyboard preferences have been set to default. Still no toggle in Final Cut Pro X.

Thanks Russ - I actually tried OnyX but it had no effect.

Seems I can't download 10.8.5 from the App Store any more, so let's just hope nothing drastic happens to my Mac Pro.

I have the system drive cloned to another - as well as my Time Machine backups, so I guess it should be OK - but not being able to toggle snapping and skimming on and off is a real pain.

Restoring the OS is not too onerous.

I restored the OS a couple of weeks ago as FCP X, Compressor, Motion, Mail, Aperture and iPhoto had stopped launching.

It took well under an hour, requiring no input from me once I had started it and all my apps, folders and files etc. were untouched and ready to use..

    Hi Ian,

I restored my OS yersterday. It took me also less than an hour but it didn't changed anything.

A clean install would be the best but it won't take an hour...

Too bad about OnyX; I was hoping it might ID a corrupted preference file.

When I did a Web search about this, I didn't find anything very useful. However, I note that Richard Tayler listed skimmer toggling and general flakiness as a FCPX bug. (I should have mentioned earlier that the S shortcut has stopped working at times for me as well – but always was on a specific project – and fixable by re-starting the app.)

I agree Ian but as Hervé points out, often just Restoring is often not enough because you simply re-import all the corrupted settings etc from your backup.

A clean reinstall is clearly what's needed but that avenue of pleasure isn't open to me because (for some reason) I don't have a Recovery HD on my system (I thought it was automatically created when you install the OS). To further complicate matters, every time I try to download Mountain Lion from the App Store, it hangs at 425 MB.

I've repaired permissions, deleted cache files, checked the App Store for unfinished downloads etc etc but every time the download starts, it gets to 425 MB and then locks up with the message:

"OS X Lion failed to download - Use the Purchases page to try again."

I've also deleted any file or part-file it's created in the Apps folder.

I'm totally at a loss to know how I can create a Recovery HD if Mountain Lion won't download from the App Store.

Just at the moment, I'm downloading Mountain Lion onto my partner Gill's iMac (she's a little apprehensive about it).

If it works, I'm hoping to create a Recovery HD on a 16GB CF card.

If THAT works, we're in business.

After all this, it's a clean reinstall for me - and my first job after installing the system on any new Mac in the future will be to make certain I have a Recovery HD.

    Ho-hum!

Gill's iMac download hung at 154 MB.

    Back to the drawing board!

At first, I suspected our broadband, but I just watched one of our videos on it, and it played perfectly - in fact the buffer indicator showed that the 4 min 44 sec video was fully downloaded by the time it had been playing for 35 seconds.

I guess the fault must be with the App Store - although I downloaded FCP X from there last night.

Same issue here - trashing pref, completely nuking the FCPX install with FCS Remover, repairing permissions, running Onyx... nothing seems to help.

    Hi Rajo,

A clean install solved all my issues to toggle snapping and skimming!

I didn't find what was the problem before.

    Hi!

Trouble is, I did a clean install last month and FCPX worked fine until now. Don't want to do another clean install. It works correctly from another user acct.

    Oh well. Thanks anyway

I did a clean reinstall and the issue was resolved - but it came back after a few days.

I did another clean reinstall - and upgraded to Mavericks - but this time I created a second (admin) user purely for FCP X - with all my other stuff on the main (first) user.

Again, the problem went away for a few days then came back. Now I just live with it but each time I launch FCP X it's a lottery as to whether snapping is active or not. Most of the time, I prefer snapping to be active (and audio skimming off) but I don't get a choice any more.

I have also lost the use of the Timeline Index - it opens, but there's no data in there - just the tabs and an empty window. Then the window won't close - I have to quit FCP X and relaunch.

    Very frustrating.

Please do file a bug report at http://www.apple.com/feedback/finalcutpro.html so Apple knows about this.

Already done - weeks ago, Rajo, but I'll do it again with more detail.
