I recommend you buy a copy of Pages for iOS (it's cheap). This will allow you to produce copies of your work which can be read using Word.

Save early save often. Stuff can break. Stuff can get stolen.
Some professors, typically English teachers, can get into some funny footnote formating that will not be supported by pages. I did notice that the good professors didn't get bogged down in the pedantic stuff.
A simple and popular way to copy files and share files amoung your devices. Will automatically sync files to dropbox server.

+1 to what rccharles said.... Definitely set up Dropbox syncing to sync and back up your documents. Dropbox has some nice file sharing available too if you want to.
You could also use Google Docs to create and store documents in the cloud. http://docs.google.com
Some nice sharing options are available with Google Docs... and its free too.
