On registering your Apple ID as an login ID here at Apple Support Communities you would have come across this page

    Apple Support Posting Name
    Uploaded with Skitch!

It is true that at one stage they were somewhat "prefilled" with a suggestion that was in the same format as the one you post with.  (someonefrom....)

From the other thread you added to.

    https://discussions.apple.com/message/19898599?ac_cid=tw123456#19898599

You have to create new Apple ID and from there a new Alias/Posting Name or Username as the Page calls it.

Hi Richard, I rather like, " richardfromrocky river " even if it is grammatically incorrect and improperly capitialised...

I too made a mistake and now have to live with " Simin in Easton ", which is not my usual user name at all - it should read " Simon in Easton ".  I have no indea how it got like it is - I must have taken my eye off the ball when I typed it.  I can tell you though Richard that you will get used to your existing user name, sooner or later.  Take it from me, it can be done.

I'm catching your sarcasm. Thanks for your thoughts.  I will not get used to this, as it is different from all other forums in which I participate across the Internet. In true Apple form, this forum needs to be completely reconstructed from the ground, up...reinvented if you will. Give my account a unique ID, and let my user name be whatever I want, whenever I want like all the rest, even Facebook.

I have to come clean, Richard - I still find it annoying that I can't change my user name, too!!  Guess we're both stuck with what we've got!!

As it has been pointed out, you do not have any points accumulated, so you could very easily create a new account here with a different user name - you wouldn't lose anything.

True, but I cannot connect the user name to my current Apple ID.  I would have to create a new Apple ID, and with all of the purchases I have made and my linked iCloud account, I'm not about to do that.

    Hi,

Babowa was suggesting you had a Apple Support Communities Only Apple ID and used it here just to post and ask questions.

I gotcha. No, unfortunately it's all tied together. Hence the current conundrum :-/

    Hi,

I have 4 external to Apple emails.

All of which I could use as the Recovery/Verification Address for a new Appe ID  (Actually my Google already is).

I also have several @mac.com names that I created at various stages to test iChat.

(in some cases I have removed the verifying email address)

Any of these I could log in with and create a new Posting ID.

I see.  Would the new forum name continue to be tied to those individual external e-mail addresses and their associated Apple IDs?

    Hi,

Anyone can create an Apple ID.

Currently that does link it to an iCloud ID as well.

This can be an external to Apple such as Yahoo, Google or your free email with your ISP.

Or you can create one directly at Apple and only end up with the @icloud.com ID

That ID can then access iTunes, iCloud, can be used in Messages and/or FaceTime.

It can be used to Log in here are Apple Support Communities.

The first time you do this you are asked to create a Posting Name/Alias.

At the time when the current forum software was launched this "prompted" the UserFromArea format.

Obviously the Apple ID is tied to some real world details you entered at some point.

The format did not space things so you do see "DavidfromBirmingham" and similar, such as your richardfromrocky river.

This automatic style seem be have been disabled so that names or Aliases are more natural.

The Alias/Posting Name you create for  any New Apple ID will only be linked to that Apple ID.

    You cannot link Apple IDs.

You cannot even use the same external email to create two Apple ID Accounts.

You cannot use one Apple issued ID to create a second.

I use one Apple ID on one iPhone and the one I sign in here with on another.

I know of some people who use different Apple IDs on Messages, FaceTime, iTunes and posting here (i.e. four different ones)

In this case we are talking about creating one just to use here which will allow you to create the posting name of your choice (if it hasn't gone already).

Ralph, come on. You know what the question is, and the answer isn't 'make a new one.' This is a simple operation that has been blocked by Apple to inhibit customer feedback and interaction. I'm so over seeing this deferrence or pathetic "Oh, well" Eeyoresque response from people in these forums. No wonder Apple consumers are considered sheep.

Changing a username is not a difficult function. It can be implemented immediately, and should have been an option since this began. There is no reason (except for what I've already stated) for it to not exist. These 'user support' forums are redundant. I can't let my company use products that render users ineffectual any longer.

My username can remain here as a reminder that not everyone is oblivious.
