Q: Logic Pro X and Mavericks

For anyone thinking about upgrading to Mavericks...... (OS X 10.9)

Firstly, don't upgrade straight away!!!!!

Only do so if you have full clone backups of your system HD. Use something like Carbon Copy Cloner or Superduper! to make a clone of your current  system disk before you try and install Mavericks... and please do not rely on Time Machine backups.. as in the past, these types of backups have no provided full protection after upgrading the OS. Only a decent cloned image of your system drive, that you can easily and quickly restore from, will provide you with that safety net just in case anything goes wrong... so you can just restore from the cloned image and be back where you started from prior to the upgrade to 10.9

Wait a few days until some of the Users here and elsewhere..  have tested out the combination of LPX and the Public Release version of Mavericks.... I know it's very tempting to use the 'latest and greatest' stuff... but if you rely on your current setup in any real sense... hold off and see what the general option is in regards to compatibility with Drivers/Hardware and Software/plugins etc.... and you will save yourself a lot of potential headaches....

The most common issues after performing a major OS X upgrade are;

1) Driver/hardware incompatibility,...... Do not upgrade unless you know for sure your Audio/Midi interfaces have drivers with full Mavericks compatibility, ready for installation. Check with the device's Websites before even thinking about upgrading! No update or comfirmation of working fine? Don't upgrade!!

2) 3rd party apps and plugin incompatibility. Again, wait and confirm any plugins and other apps you use/need are fully 10.9 compatibile.... before upgrading.

3) Initial bugs.... All OS updates will have some bugs in them initially. .. Its the 'nature of the beast'. No matter how much Beta testing is done, bugs do and will slip through the cracks.... So, wait until at least the first couple of bug fixes are released to correct these enevitable issues... before making the transition.

The above is just some friendly advice from someone who has made all of these mistakes in the past (and paid for it!)  It's your choice to follow it or ignore it of course...... but history tells us that those who just charge ahead and upgrade tend to suffer for it later.. Just looking at the hundreds of posts that were made here by users with issues.. after Mountain Lion was released.. willl confirm this....

Cheers..

Logic Pro X, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5), Motu UltraLite V3

Okay.. so this is a different issue to the iMac and FD issue that so many people are reporting.....because those with the FD issue have problems with just using internal Audio... as well as an external AI..

Therefore, do the observation tests I suggested and in particular watch out for if it happens after your screen and/or Mac goes to sleep.... Try changing the energy settings  temporarily so nothing goes to sleep... (just set it to never on both sliders) and see if that fixes it..

Otherwise, just keep a careful note of what you do just before it happens.. and again, see if there is any pattern...

....and test when nothing else is running.. other than Finder and whichever app you are using when it occurs, like just iTunes or just Logic.

I will happily attest that I am running Mavericks with Logic Pro X on my 2010 MacBook Air, along with NI Komplete, with no issues.

My workflow hasn't been affected whatsoever. I'm delighted.

Cool. What else do you have in your set-up, hardware wise. Sound card? Control surface? Keyboard(s) etc.

To list them would help others with similar hardware, I/O etc who are considering upgrading their OS

I wish I could say the same.  Mavericks on a 2010 iMac with NI Komplete 9, and I am having a number of issues.  Kontakt 5 has been crashing on a fairly regular basis with heap corruption errors, LPX beat mapping isn't working for me more than half of the time (didn't experience any problem with same prior to Mavericks), and LPX itself is crashing occasionally as well (e.g., sometimes when I close a project).

I should have waited before doing the upgrade.  Lesson learned ... now I can only hope that these companies eventually address these issues so that I can get my studio back.

Other system details: Apogee Duet 2 with the new 10.9 driver, Mackie MCU Pro control surface, Novation Impulse 61 controller (but without the Automap software), Akai MPD32.

    Hey Art, Hi All,

Just a bit of an update with my Motu issues.

Have been in touch with Tech Support who are amazing at Motu!  Unfortunately they haven't been able to re-create my issue of audio loss through an external interface, but they did just mention that another customer of theirs has got the issue!  The only difference they think at this moment throughout their testing is that this may have something to do with the Haswell generation of Intel processors.

    Mysticfm

Sorry to hear about your issues, that's a very impressive and expensive piece of software not working for you and I can really empathise!

It does seem that there is an issue with Mavericks concerning it's own hardware and 3rd party HW/SW

    Speak Soon,

    James

I own both LP9 and LPX... would upgrading to Mavericks on a 2.4 Core2Duo (4gb RAM) iMac allow me to run LPX?

Hey guys, im getting this problem when opening up old sessions.

i just got the new retina MBP w/mavericks

logic is looking in the root insert list rather then in the audio units folder for my third party plugins

all of the plugins are installed and working in the AU manager its just that logic keeps looking in the wrong spot

when i replace the crossed out plugins with the same plug in all the settings go to the default values which is not usable...

Hi Art...first of all thanks for taking the time to post.

I unfortunately upgraded to Mavericks without reading the warning first and it's been a nightmare. Logic 9 isn't working at all well (experiencing major hangups and have lost multi monitor support) so I want to go back to using 10.8.5 somehow.

I just learned that Super Duper doesn't keep dated clones, only the latest so I overwrote post Mavericks Doh!

Wish I had read your post beofre.

I got Logic X a day or two after it came out and put it on my MBP Retina. Installation was pain free with none of the content download issues that others have experienced. It's been running well on that machine with an Apogee Duet, UAD2 Satellite and LaCie Thunderbolt drive. I've had a few crashes but stability-wise, I'm pretty happy with it. The auto save feature is an excellent new addition and works as expected when the rare crash does occur.

I waited a while longer to upgrade my studio machine, an older MacPro tower. Again, no problems running it with two UAD cards, a pair of Metric Halo 2882 interfaces and a Raptor 10k RPM drive. On the studio machine, I record 16 - 24 tracks at a time with the buffers at 64. (I feed the digital headphone system via software monitoring over aux sends like a traditional analog set-up.) Again, mostly problem free, except for some audio glitches while scrolling during playback, as some others have reported. No clipping during mixing with larger buffer settings.

Both machines upgraded to Mavericks with no problems.

Thankful to be among the lucky ones this time around.

Logic Pro X is only delivered via the Mac App Store as a direct download and not as a disk image from BitTorrent...

Maybe before I allowed all the ASSumptions to be made, I should have mentioned that I backed up the downloaded it to a cd (DVD) in the event my system crashed, which a previous update caused data loss, therefore, I tried to reinstall it with the disc...

Since the post of my origianl question, I have reinstalled the software from my "purchase history..."

So, keep your ASSUming finger pointing self righteous name calling ***** calm...
