As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
Post back with the result.

Thanks for suggestion. Saw your posting earlier and tried it with no positive result.
Frustration is that the import worked fine when first used then just stoppped and started giving the "unreadable files" and "unrecognized format" messages. Have used three different mini cards and only one worked, for a short time, anyway.

Thanks for your response.
Usually, when the system worked, just deleted from phone. Cannot find reformat function on phone. Have taken new pix with same result; "unreadable files" and "unrecognized format" messages.
Greetings from La Quinta, just "over the hill."

Is the card remoable from the phone? If so try using a card reader to access the photo via the Finder. Upload them to a folder on the Desktop and see if you can open them with Preview.
One you have the files off of the card you can reformat the card to FAT with Disk Utility. Then put back in phone, take some more photos and see if iPhoto will recoginize them.
My best friend lives in La Quinta.
Reformat the card to MS-DOS (FAT). Take some test shots and try again.
You can give this a try on the existing problem files: download Convert to JPG and Embed sRGB profile from Toad's Cellar, unzip and drop a copy of some of the image files onto it. Once done see if the converted files can be imported into iPhoto.
It's a workaround but may be able to salvage the files until a solution is found.
