Q: ios 7 Mail Search Problems

I'm having some issues with the mail search feature in iOS7 on my iPhone.  If I search for the name of a sender in the email application I receive weird results.  First, I receive two (duplicate) copies of every email, but those duplicate copies do not appear in the inbox when I'm not in search mode.  Second, the emails do not appear in chronological order.

Is anyone else having these issues? Any clue how to solve them?

iPhone 5, iOS 7

Ok - I see - try starting on page 1. This is strictly an exchange issue. Do have exchange or work with it at all?

Props for sounding like all of the techs at Apple - or thumbs down to them for having the same thing to say as an untrained SMART kid. It's been a nightmare.

I think I'll forward you info on to the 'engineer' who has given the same advice! Maybe that will open their eyes! I did mean smart for real - literally textbook apple responses!

Drop it, kid. It doesn't work. Unless you have an exchange email box, you're not gonna get what's happening here.

mtnsupport - did apple say exactly what could be changed on the exchange side of things to fix this? Another mailbox user on the same exchange server in our environment is receiving chronological results to his email searches. He does have a 5S but I'm not certain that that would affect anything.

thanks @ Karlcar - I was trying to be compassionate - but in reality - Apple is doing a poor job of training its people - if the 16 yo who does not even know what exchange is can guess at the same answers

No - I have repeatedly asked them to clarify which 'mysterious' settings we could ALL change our sever settings to - on the back end - in order to clear this problem.  ABSOLUTELY NO RESPONSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Really infuriating.

Maybe the top execs at Apple need to get frusterated with the issue themselves before any more will be done.  I will keep the boards updated if I can ever get another response from them.

Thanks for your reply. I am amazed at the lack of Apple's response and also wonder why we aren't hearing more corporate mail users chime in. Going to try twitter for additional more exposure.

I have the same issue on my 5s. Have exchange email from work as well as yahoo and gmail  accounts.  Search returns results in random sort (but interestingly sometimes I'll see the most recent exchange emails for a split second and then they get moved way down as other emails replace them, sometimes where the search term is in the email address instead of the subject or body)

Seeing the same thing here - Oddly, not all exchange users are seeing this, despite being on the same exchange server,  iOS and devices. Exchange 2010, 5s and iPad mini running latest updates, it seems account and not device specific. Ghost / duplicate search terms, results in no sort of chronological order.

This should be an embarrasment for Apple. I'm so confused that the industry standard for any mail app (filtered email searches) has been removed. I loved iOS Mail until this update. After looking for a fix for a while (and waiting for the update to fix it) I couldn't wait any longer and decided to pay $2.99 on the App Store for an app called Sparrow which has all the features of the old iOS 6 Mail app and more. The only downside to the Sparrow app is there is no control over the font size.

You had my hopes up! All the feautures except exchange mail support "Exchange support. Sparrow does not support Exchange. The feature is not planned ".

Still no further with this issue and more people have noticed!

We are experiencing the chronological order search and duplicate email search problem as well for all employees using IOS7 and Exchange.  I called Apple and escalated the issue to an Account Security Senior Advisor named Ryan.  I sent Ryan the link to this very forum as he was not aware of the issue.  Now that he is aware of the problem and the many people it is affecting, he is going to escalate it up the chain.  Hopefully this problem gets resolved in the next build.  Maybe they can bring back the filtered search results as well so I can go back to searching my sent items folder for anything that's actually in the sent items and not my entire inbox.

Thanks for the update! I'm suprised they are not aware of the issue with the number of people calling or reporting bugs - I've spoken to a fair few people who have left feedback, including myself, but I'm wondering if it just turns into virtual dust when you hit send!!

We have the same problem, but I do see some logic in the ordering of the results. I think it's trying to sort them by some kind of confidence rating before it sorts by date. It seems to favour results found in the To (and From) fields over hits in the body, for example.

It also seems to apply some rules to multiple word searches, perhaps looking for first name and surname pairs. E.g. A search for "jfjeudnd John" finds nothing, but a search for "John mdidufbdhdzzxdw" finds lots of Johns while ignoring the second search term.

I can't explain the duplicates. Maybe these are emails it's found in multiple iterations of searching, eg it found the search terms in the To field and then later in the body.

I also suspect the ordering might be influenced by the fact that it's a live search, and is returning results as you type. I suspect you can get different ordering depending on how quickly you type.

I'd prefer to see a return of the choice of field to search. It's good that it can now search the body, but generally I know which field I want to search, and searching others as well will just add unwanted results. They can have Universal as a choice if they want, and all the people who want a list of emails they didn't want to see can choose that one.
