Use Command + D

Thanks for this, I was being driven a little crazy by the bookmarks behavior in Mavericks Safari. I liked the prior behavior in which clicking "+" would open the bookmarks directory window and highlight the bookmark title so I could add my own keywords. Command D helps, wish they hadn't made a change that puts more clicks in my workflow.

Agreed. This change is rather lame.

Here's a solution in Safari 7: click the + button next to the address bar and hold it for a second. A drop-down will appear with your folders and you'll be able to select which folder to put the bookmark in. A bit easier than Command+D
