I made a backup from all my files including my Aperture library. After moving to Mavericks (clean install), there is a new Aperture version and I am not able to import my old library getting the message: Library was made with older version of Aperture, please update to newest version and try again (loosely translated from german). How can I import my old library now?

Library was made with older version of Aperture, please update to newest version and try again (loosely translated from german). How can I import my old library now?

Are you really trying to import the library into another Aperture library and not simply opening it?

When you double-click your restored Aperture library, to open it in Aperture, you should see a message telling you, that the library needs upgrading.  Confirm this and allow Aperture to upgrade the library; then Aperture should proceed to upgrade the library to the new format.

Anyway, then I can simply open it, update it, and then import?

Yes, first update the library to the current version, before you try to import it.

I would always import the smaller library into the larger library, btw. That will be quicker and not need so much disk space.

The end result will be the same - the resulting library will roughly have the same size, no matter, if if you merge a small library into a large one or a large one into a small one. But during the merge procedure will Aperture need additional working space, and I noticed that the amount of additional working space required while merging will depend on the size of the imported library. So it will be more economic to import the smaller library  into the larger one.
