I returned my rattling iphone 5s today through a convoluted refund and new purchase transaction in London in Rwgents Street. The sales guy admitted this is an issue that is affecting a lot of people. He wouldn't officially admit it's a problem though he sympathised. He said its on his phone also and is on all phones, and recommended a case to stop the rattle (which is a huge cop out). So I got a new 5s today and low and behold it has the same rattling issue, which I knew about in the store , but I I took it out of exasperation. This was wasted about 5 hours of my time, with re sync ups etc.

I phoned apple customer care this morning and seem to have got through to a US call center. The guy was formal and refs out a statement from apple saying that the camera lens and on off button move etc and that this is part of the manufacturing technique bla bla bla. He claimed he hadn't heard about this issue before, which I doubt.

Some store managers will pretend with a straight face that it's not an issue and that it's designed like that. I also went to Covent Garden store today to double check and spoke with two apple guys together, one the manager of the store. When they heard my rattle complaint there was a nervousness of recognition in their eyes although they would not admit to it's being a problem.

So for now I give up but in my mind this is a nasty tactic from apple execs to stifle debate and complaints and has permanently damaged their reputation.

I look forward to the rise of a superior competitor which I will gladly flock to and convince all my friends and corporate buyers to do likewise

My first unit (week 39) rattled and was returned for refund. At this point different Applecare staff told me there should be no rattle from the power button.

Ordered another unit and after 3 weeks I received a week 42 unit and the power button rattles. Contacted Applecare and was initially told it was the camera which is clearly isn't. I was then asked to hold and the new line is that this is normal and by design. Seriously why design in a rattle that pollutes recordings and is really  irretating  to customer buying a premium product.

Made a complaint and was asked to provide product feedback here -   http://www.apple.com/feedback/

I also find the home button sounds really cheap and nasty.  It's like buying a Merc and finding that reassuringly solid  sound when closing the door has been changed to sound like a 70's Fiat.

New unit is also be returned for refund.

Come on Apple step up and deliver on your marketing claims about attention to detail.

It's like buttons more smaller than holes on case.

we really must do something about this! we're paying  a lot of money and at the end they dont even try to fix the problem ...and they make thier employees lie about the issue!

The lying is the most serious issue, above and beyond the product defect. It's sickening, and Apple employers will pay for this

To the person who asked whether or not this is a problem with the 5C: I just received a new 5C in the mail, and the first thing I noticed as I was unpacking it was a rattling noise. Shaking it, I traced the noise the top button. That's why googled and how I found this discussion. I plan on returning it tomorrow. A $450 phone should not make rattling noises. My 4S has been dropped, thrown casually into my bag, has never been in a case, and is still solid as a rock. No rattles, no noise. It's a small thing, but that little noise will make me crazy. If they are, in fact, all that way, I'll stick to my 4s :(

Note: Apple are trying to censor my comments about The CEO and have deleted my posting.

    So here it is again.

I have been reading the comments on the iphone5 (not 5s, 5 from October 2012 link here https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4337700?start=15&tstart=0

...and, guess what, the iphone 5 had the same rattling issue in the on / off button, and the users were highlighting the same issues, the rattle obviously coming from the power button, the so-called 'genius' staff pretending there was no issue and that it was not an issue, and many people bringing back a rattler, only to get another rattler as a replacement.

So Apple knew about this defect in the 5 release and did nothing about it, and left it in the 5s.

This is unbelievable and shows utter contempt for customers

Since Apple Stasi delete my comments I will leave my comment at this for now..,

With this issue affecting most instances of the iPhone 5S, a replacement programme would be too costly. It would be more cost effective to repair them by replacing the defective power button. However, the problem with this might be the amount of glue used in the iPhone 5S, which could turn a 2-minute job at a Genius Bar into a half-hour job or longer.

    @400oz

that apple is censoring negative user experiences is new to me. Did you use any inappropriate language?

However, we are free to post our experiences on any forum or blog with high user traffic to make as most people as we can aware of the problems!

that apple or a line manager is advising their stuff to lie for them aswell. if documents appear prooving that, I would like to see them...

else this is just speculation, but I could think that the one or other

    Lowmaster

I only said that Jobs would have frog marched Cook out of the building when he found out about the Operational issue with the rattle having persisted since 2012, and they deleted my comment.

Looks like they deleted your comment also

For what it's worth, the Spigen case helps town down a little. I'm definitely not giving Apple 40$ when their product is faulty. I feel like, overall, it is loosening with use! Not cool, but hey, when the thing gets so bad that they can't help but notice it, Apple will be obligated to replace it.

Same problem here. Two 5s' in the household, both have the rattling power button. Interesting to see if this ever gets fixed. Doesn't really bother me, but it certainly seems to be a major issue since everyone seems to have this.
