Messages---> Preferences---> Accounts---> make sure your phone number is checked.

If it's not there, sign out of messages on both your Mac and iPhone. Sign back into the Mac first, wait a minute then back on your iPhone. Or it could be the other way around, I just had to do it the other day.

But realize this, actual text messages to non-Apple devices will not show up on your Mac.

    Hi,

    Do it this way.

On the Mac Shut down the Messages app

On the iPhone go to Settings > Messages.

    Remove the Apple ID.

Place the iPhone in Airplane mode for 5 mins  (this breaks with the server)

On restarting the iPhone in normal mode go to Settings > Messages and check the app is active, that the iPhone Number is listed and that it is greyed out but ticked as Active.

    Re-add the Apple ID.

The break with the server and re-adding the Apple ID will cause the iMessages server to re-link them.

Now restart the app on the Mac.

You should one or two pop ups saying the iPhone is using the Apple ID and the iPhone number.

    Accept the pop up(s).

Accepting the pop ups adds the iPhone number to the list in Messages > Preferences > Accounts > iMessages account for the Receive At and the Send From drop down.

I tried this and it's not working... but my phone number is checked.  Everything seems set to send messages from my phone number but nothing goes through.

I have always been able to send from imessage to users with iphones... only changes I've made recently are installing mavericks and logging in to Jabber.  Not sure when the problem started but I think it was after Jabber, but not sure if this caused it...

    HI,

So you ran through the settings on your iPhone.

The Mac version of Messages lists the iPhone number as an option in the iMessages account for both Receive At and the Send From Drop down.

The Jabber account should make no difference.

Can you send iMessages from your Apple ID ?

    Hello thanks for answering!

I went through settings on my mac and the "receive" and "send" both have my phone number on them.  I have switched to my gmail, @me, and icloud, and none can send or receive.  It is no longer updating messages that are sent to and from my phone either, and it used to do that.

Just went to find the last time it worked, and it was 10/22 at 8:00.  Then I looked at when I downloaded Mavericks, and it was 10/22, and I remember leaving it to download and install when I went to bed that night.  So, Mavericks.

I tried this a few times and it doesn't seem to be working.  When I restart after resetting the keychain, it wants my password for all relevant apps.  iMessage asks for my password and after I enter it, it comes back up and asks again and again.  Then it stops asking, but still doesn't work like it used to.

    Hi,

Can I ask if you upgraded from something before OS X 10.8.2 ?

After this point you need the Serial Number to be present on the Logic/motherboard and readable by the System

Use the Apple Menu > About this Mac.

Then click twice on the Line that read the Current OS X version.

It will change to the Build number and then the Serial Number should be shown.

(Don't post it or a picture of it)

I did this and looked at the serial number.  What is supposed to happen after I look at the serial number?

I don't recall what OS I upgraded from... I just do upgrades when they come available... not trying to be difficult!

    HI,

If the Serial Number shows up then this is not your issue.

You can update to Mavericks from Lion and from Mountain Lion.

In Mountain Lion this means you could be anywhere between OS X 10.8(.0) and OS X 10.8.5

Messages was changed at the OS X 10.8.2 update to require that the Serial Number was present to use in the Auth Token that shows in the Keychain.

    From earlier you posted:

I have switched to my gmail, @me, and icloud, and none can send or receive.

Is this your actual Apple ID and the @me.com iCloud link email you got followed by the @iCloud variant ?

Messages does treat these as Separate Apple IDs.

If my suggestion is correct which is being used on the iPhone at the moment ?
