I updated my Apple TV and now all that shows up is a picture of my AppleTV being connected by some sort of USB wire to the iTunes symbol.  What does this mean?  I've unplugged and tried other methods that are supposed to reset this.

Sorry if this is an obvious question, but I don't understand and I can't seem to find my manual.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.

If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:

    1. Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
    2. Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
    3. Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
    4. Open iTunes.
    5. Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.

(You may already have a micro USB cable if you have a camera or other digital device)

I'm having the same trouble on a ATV2 device. After an ATV update about 2 days ago, there's this logo on the screen with a USB cable with an arrow aiming up to an iTunes logo on my television. The ATV2 unit's light is also blinking rapidly. I tried doing the unplug all cables and wires method, but it didn't work. It's a bummer I'll have to order a mini USB cable that I never needed before.

I called Apple to see if they could send a fix to make things right that its latest update caused to my atv2 unit. A tech support guy said he didn't know if Apple could do that at this time, but that he would send the info on to an apple software engineer. Hopefully Apple send an update soon to correct this problem.

Thanks for your help Winston. It worked. Lucky I had a micro USB cable from my LG cellphone to help through this problem. :-)

Hi Coronis, It’s a bummer that Apple gave our ATV units a bad firmware update and we have to go through the trouble of resetting the ATV device with a micro USB cable. It’s very aggravating, but I’m thankful for all the advice that was given over the Apple Support Community Site.

What you do is plug in the Micro USB cable from your ATV device into your Mac

and it will properly reset and update the ATV.  You’ll have to do your passwords and other ATV setting all over again as usual after a reset.

A Micro USB cable is available at macmall.com for a low cost that should help those who don’t have one. You might be able to use a Micro USB cable that came with your cellphone as I did. Here’s link to the Micro USB cable at macmall.com. Hope this helps people.

The problem is not so much the software itself, it is that the software became corrupt due to network difficulties or was installed over a system that already had some corruption.
