Q: Mavericks and Outlook - repeated download of same emails

Since my Mavericks upgrade my outlook 2011 download duplicate emails that have already been received.  I rebuilt my identity database and it did not help.  I am on Outlook 14.3.8 (Outlook 2011).  Does anyone know how to either fix this issue permanently or roll back the Mavericks upgrade?

jakeworld, I believe those of us with duplicates whose problems were solved by checking the "Prevent App Nap" box all had accompaning connection error messages.  As you are not receiving those, it seems to me that your problem is indeed different than ours.

I'll be interested in what solves your issue, but - short of an iCloud issue - I have no idea at the moment.  Do check the Microsoft discussion areas also.  They will have plenty of good ideas there.

    Hi terry,

in addition to the duplicate emails and the error messages such as server connection failed over the last week after installing Mavericks , this morning I  found that when opening my outlook it showed error-18000 and could not rebuild my database.

I just joined the group to try and sort out the error 18000

came across your suggestion on unchecking the checkmark for mail in icloud account and " prevent app nap"

I am going to do that,  and hope to solve the process of error 18000 in the process.

But i am not sure on where I will find the " internet accounts" control panel.

    can you help

    Hi zorro2004.

From what we're reading on this thread, it seems as though unchecking Mail in the Internet Accounts control panel will not do any good for the problem we are having (or in my case, were having). Personally, I found that it did no good for me, and I have reinstated the checkmark there with no ill affects.

In any event, the "Internet Accounts" control panel is one of the control panel items listed within System Preferences. Click on the Apple in the upper left of the top menu bar and it should be the fourth item down -- or click on the icon with the "gears" shown in the dock. "Internet Accounts" will be one of the control panels shown in the window which will open.

What seems to have fixed the issue for me was the suggestion to check "Prevent App Nap" in Outlook's "Get Info" window. I have had no errors and no instances of multiple duplicate mail in Outlook since doing this.

Regarding your returned "error-18000" during your database rebuild, you might read this thread over at Microsoft. Those database rebuilds use an enormous amount of disk space.  I did a Google search for "outlook for mac error-18000" and received many promising hits. Try that. The Microsoft Office for Mac Community has some very sharp folks there that will be able to help with specific Microsoft Outlook for Mac problems.

Hi masutfin. Follow these insructions by Terry D Youngpin - seems to be a solution resolving this issue.  I have just applied this fix and will post back to results.

Open the Application folder.  This is the folder that contains all  your applications such as Safari, Mail, TextEdit, etc.  Within that  folder, you will see another folder named "Microsoft Office 2011."  Open  that.  You will now see the various applications which make up Office  2011, and you will see Outlook there.

    Click once

on the Outlook icon to select

it. Now, while holding the Command key down, press "i" (i as in info).  When you do this, a tall narrow window will open named "Microsoft  Outlook Info."  In the top section of that window is a section named  "General."  You will see a little box you can check named "Prevent App  Nap." Click in that box to indeed prevent app nap. Close all the  windows.  I always restart after something like this, but I doubt you  have to

It is frustrating. The App Nap option did not work for me.

I continue to download old emails from my Yahoo Pop account.

Does anybody know an alternative method to prevent this from happening?

    Hi Copernico.

Sorry to hear of your problems and that checking the "Prevent App Nap" box in Outlook Info didn't help.  Are you also getting numerous error messages regarding connection issues? If you are not getting connection error messages concurrent with the duplicate emails, I suspect your problem has something to do with iCloud.

My POP mail is what was getting duplicate emails, along with many error messages regarding connection failures of different types. It appears that checking the Outlook "Prevent App Nap" box fixed my problem. However, your issue may be a bit different. My POP account does use the Yahoo servers, even though it is not exactly a Yahoo address.

I would take a peek at how your accounts are set in the "Internet Accounts" Control Panel.

Here's what I have set in the "Internet Accounts" Control Panel:

iCloud Account - Mail, no checkmark. Most others checked.

POP Account - Mail, checkmark.  No others checked.

If indeed you are getting the connection error messages along with the duplicate emails, then I would go back and be certain the "Prevent App Nap" checkbox is actually still checked. Perhaps a restart after checking it would be in order, if you haven't already done so. But, do go and make sure the "Prevent App Nap" checkbox is still checked, especially if you are getting the connection error messages concurrent with the duplicate emails.

Thanks, Terry.  Got it, Did it and it worked.  I didn't restart straight away and I started to get some duplicates but after a restart, no duplicates for days now.  All the Best

I've come back to update my status.  I tried the "Prevent App Nap" fix and both email duplication and server conection problems disappeared.  I then tried unticking "Prevent App Nap" to see what happened and the problems did not reappear for several days - until today, when the server connection problems restarted.  No email duplicates though.  So I tried ticking "Prevent App Nap" again, but the server connection problems have not gone away this time.  I'm not aware of changing anything else along the way.  Conclusion - the problems seem to be a bit random and stopping App Nap for Outlook, although it can be helpful, is not a definitive fix.  We're all wasting a lot of time on this aren't we!

Hi Masutfin,  I applied Terry's fix on Sunday (2 days) and all seems ok.  Only have an issue with Office Reminders now in that if I minimise I cannot access and have to close and re-open.  I applied the same fix but it does not seem to work.  Let's hope Microsoft bring out an update soon.

Swaby9 -  It's not my fix, it's actually the fix suggested by poster JoFr123.  See the original post, where the issue has now been marked as solved. I have simply restated the process to others.

    Hi Everyone!

I followed the instruction to mark the "Don't prevent the App Nap". It worked for me just fine for about 14 days. My Mac always stayed turned on, and my applications too. The other night I had to force quit my Outlook 2011. When I restarted the application it started to recieve the duplicates emails :-(

Now I don't know what to do!!!

Hope that someone got the answer... :-)
