Notes:
No WD/Seagate software EVER installed.
This drive is used as a TM backup drive only.
This is the 3rd time OSX has corrupted the partition on this drive.
To delete the parition, I have to boot into Linux to delete it. Then OSX's Disk Utility is able to create a new partition (yes, I could have created a partition under Linux).
Oddly enough, I have a 2TB WD FW800 drive in the same FW chain, no problems at all.

Nov 12, 2013 9:18 AM in response to PlotinusVeritasby pablotravel,I don't, I have never used or installed WD apps in any computer. And in my 1 week old Macbook Pro I haven't installed it either.
What's the best way for recovering the data?
And after recovery what do I do? It can happen again... Should I buy a different brand hard drive? Which one?

Its not just about WD software/hardware. I lost a Seagate drive formatted with Mac Disk Utility
Yes, i know that,...and WD hardware itself alone has nothing to do with any of these posts.
-------What is the TB size of the Seagate which was corrupted?
~thank you.

Yes , I see you're getting 029d drive eject errors then ... no media is present (0xe00002e4) errors
Are you running FireVault on said HD's. ?
-
Nov 12, 2013 10:07 AM in response to PlotinusVeritasby coffeebreath,Thanks.
FileVault isn't enabled on this machine.
In the past 10mins, a Disk Repair run actually finished saying the drive could not be repaired; mounted the driveand changed the perms so the drive is read-only for everyone bar system / admin (IIRC).
I'm now updating the perms on the drive to enable RW, then I'll kick a TM backup off, if I get that far.
I miss the click-of-death days, it was easier to diagnose ;-)

Nov 12, 2013 10:15 AM in response to coffeebreathby coffeebreath,So I have a different problem.
I can now RW on the drive, after updating the perms.

Nov 12, 2013 10:31 AM in response to Trocafishby Basilic,Same issue as the initiator of this thread and same question: how to -just- recover the disk structure - as no files have been deleted?
I have a MyBook Studio II with 2 x 1TB disks, setup as a factory default WD RAID 0 volume, ie a 2TB volume connected with FW800, originally formated with Disk Utility in 2011, but without any WD Drive or RAID Manager sw installed at the time. For no sensible reasons, I installed the WD sw at some point a year ago...
I am concerned by the fact that I ran two recovery utilities in demo mode (not until process is complete though), namely EasyRecovery Pro suggested by WD support and Data Rescue 3 as seen in this discussion. However, the results suggested by these two utilities are giving list of files with brand new names.
I would not care if I had not that many files, but this disk was used as a working disk for video editing with Final Cut Pro and iMovie. Those two video editing sw create specific file names and directory structures when importing video files. I am an amateur video editor but that represents thousands of files. Even if I can recover the video project files, those will be unworkable until after I repoint to the newly created file names.
I am actually not sure as to how to run these disk recovery utilities. In effect, they can detect a disk and a volume of 2TB. But what tells it's a RAID0? No files have been deleted as such, but instead the partition table got corrupted. So I cannot see the point to scan all the disk to try to recover files which haven't been deleted. Isn't there a tool that just simply recreate a partition table? Is it worth trying "repair disk" in MacOS Disk Utility? Or be patient and wait a fix from... Apple... WD...? Who among us will try it first?
(Blame me: I had no backup for this drive)

Nov 12, 2013 11:01 AM in response to E27by E27,These links may help clarify this problem for some:
http://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/mavericks-deletes-external-hard-drive-dat a/
Using the new WD uninstall zip may not confirm if you did in fact have any installed WD software as it contradicted the VCD uninstall assessment and the actual situation. Further the zip will run again posting that you have uninstalled again - this repeats. As posted this zip added preventative auto WD uninstall code to the HD. No doubt a patch will come at some point - until then 10.8 has been recommended.

Nov 12, 2013 11:28 AM in response to Trocafishby NOSR,Hi guys!
I´m running a iMac 8.1 (late 2008) on Snow Leopard and want to upgrade too Mavericks.
I have a "Carbon Copy Cloner" backup on a NAS (Synology DS213j, using Synology Hybrid RAID, running DSM4.3).
After reading this forum I´m afraid of upgrading to Mavericks.
- Any experience with NAS-devices "loosing" data?
- Suggestions on how to be extra safe?
// Regards

Nov 12, 2013 11:41 AM in response to NOSRby so4610,At the very least, I would suggest you uninstall any Western Digital software using their uninstaller and turn off your Synology when upgrading.
I would also suggest copying your Synology onto another disk if you can prior to upgrading.
But to be honest, I would try and wait before upgrading - Western Digital must sort this out soon.

Nov 12, 2013 1:05 PM in response to Trocafishby donna156,I have WD Drive Utilities and WD Security on both of my iMacs for a Passport portable hard drive, which I have not connected since the Mavericks install. My Time Capsule was trashed by the Mavericks install. I don't know if there is any connection with the WD apps.

Nov 12, 2013 1:58 PM in response to Trocafishby Demara,I'm having a hard time following this thread; there's a lot of technical jargon that I don't understand.
I've been having problems with my 2011 macbook (video issues) for over a month, so I've been keeping all 400GB of hard drive data on a WD My-Passport for mac. It hasn't really been re-formatted or anything; I took it straight out of the box and connected it to time machine. Anyways, the laptop's about to go in for another video card replacement. I'm concerned, since I'm installing Mavericks once it gets back (running Snow Leopard right now), whether plugging my HD in will cause the data to be erased from it. Can anyone explain exactly why this happens (or not), perhaps without such big words?
Appreciate it.

Nov 12, 2013 2:03 PM in response to Demaraby jeffsphoto21,Onw word - not very big (except for the caps) - DON'T. Stay away from Mavericks and any external drive.

You've been running Snow Lion for years and you feel the need to update the OS now? What's the rush?
Anyone is nuts to update their system until this thing gets sorted. And they will get it sorted. Wait for Apple to release an update to Mavericks, then watch how it performs and the make your decision.
And yeah, you should have, in the least, two backups (three is best) on hand before doing an OS update.
