On Hold - Authentication Error - Printing in OS X Lion

Hi all,

I am trying to print to a shared windows printer and keep getting an 'awaiting authentication error', with the print job pausing.

I shared my printer successful with a PC running vista (to which the printer is attached) but since upgrading to Lion, I am no longer able to print. When a job is sent to the printer, it processes and then a pause button appears on the printer icon, with the message 'On hold authentication required'. When I click resume, I get a pop up which asks me to enter a login and password. This information is my username and password for my login to Windows. I 'Connect as – Registered User'. When I click enter, the system thinks for a moment and the job then goes back on hold with the 'On hold authentication required'.

I have tried removing and reinstalling the printers, using different printers (connected to the same Windows PC), changing settings in CUPS, all for no result. This has only happened since I upgraded to Lion. Snow Leopard gave me no printer problems at all.

For the record, I have a 2011 Macbook Pro i5 13" with 4Gb of ram. I am printing to a Windows PC running Windows Vista over a wireless network (the Windows PC is connected via ethernet to the router). I am (trying to ) printing to an HP LaserJet 1006 and/or HP Photosmart C5280.

Anyone got any answers, I have done a search and others have the same problem, however, no offered solution seems to work.

I solved my problem. I can print again. I've found an other thread(https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3193344) where they suggested looking in the keychain (just open the 'Keychain acces' application).

So what I've done:

  • I removed all references in the keychain to the windows computer or printer. (I guess removing one too many won't do any harm. If the username/password is needed again, you'll be asked for it).
  • I removed my printer and reinstalled it
  • In CUPS management (http://localhost:631), I changed the DPI explicitly to 300x300 instead of default (see manage printers, default options)

And that was it. I printed, was asked for my windows credentials one more time. I entered them and all is fine now. Let's hope it stays that way.

I hope this can solve your problem as well.

Same here since the upgrade from 10.6.8 to 10.7.0. Never had problems before that.

Printer (HP LaserJet 4L) is connected to a windows pc and accessed with smb://ip/sharedprintername.

However I get past the authentication required message by resuming and entering my Mac's admin username/password. After that, the printer goes into pause. Sometimes it shortly shows something like 'unable to connect to server' before that.

I tried everything I could think of: managing it directly in cups, reinstalling drivers, removing/re-adding, resetting printers,.. The weird thing is, I could print just once after fiddling with the policy setting in CUPS (http://localhost:631) under the default settings. But after a reboot, back to 😟

I'm afraid we'll have to wait for at least release 10.7.1.. Hopefully they fix it soon.
