Q: Impossible to activate iMessage and Facetime in Mavericks

So how I missed that reading your list.

Double check the router has a Time settings an change this if required.

An older fix from early in Mountain Lion's version was to add a Public DNS server to System Preferences > Network > Advanced Button > DNS tab

Ideally this should show the ISPs DNS servers in a greyed out form as the System pick them up from the router.

Sometimes it will show the router's IP address such as 192.168.1.1 (or 10.x.x.x or somewhere in 172.16.x.x to 172.32.x.x).

Does the Serial Number match the label on the computer ?

If so delete the Keychain items for the Auth tokens for FaceTime and Messages.

They will read something like "your AppleID-Auth token" at the end.

I don't think my router has time settings.  I'm not sure how to check it if it does.

The ISPs DNS servers are greyed out.  The router's IP address is not shown.

The serial number matches the label on the computer.

I only had 1 Auth token with my name in it.  I deleted it, restarted the computer, and there is still no change.  I checked login, local items, system, and system roots with the category selected as all items.  The one I deleted was under login.

In System Preferences > Network you can see the IP the computer has and the Router IP when you are using Ethernet.

If you are using WiFi then used the Advanced Button > TCP/IP tab

You would then normally use that address in a Web Browser ( a number instead of a name like Apple.com)

At this point it is likely to ask for a User ID and a password.

This site can help with what they might be.

Navigate to the Make.

(Dismiss the advert page)

Select the model.

In the Applications and Games page select AIM talk (it is less daunting)

 

The Instruction page will have pictures that start with a Browser header and then the dialogue for the User ID and Password.

They will tell you the defaults but just below that there is a link to Other defaults from the same brand.

 

You don't need any of the other Instructions

That's not to say the link to the Screen Shots page will not help.

Having said that my Sky hub ( a device supplied by my ISP for their Fibre service) does not have a Time setting although the Log reports a data link to a Time server.

I would try adding  Public DNS server to the DNS list

I use both 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 which are run by Google.

I experienced this problem AFTER doing a clean install of mavericks.    Your Syslog tipped me off ... I read my Log and had similar warnings.   However my warnings had more to do with Security Certificates,Encryption Keys   and Tokens.

I opened up Keychain and deleted everything i could find relating to Icloud and its services.   tokens, keys, certificates and passwords.    I launched imessages and voilà  it signed in and verified.   I launched FaceTime and signed in with no problem.

Can you tell us what Security Certificates, Encryption Keys and Tokens did you remove? How can you know that a certain certificate, key or token is related to iMessage or Facetime?

In the keychain app under the main login keychain I deleted all the certificates in the certificates category,   I also Deleted all the apple related Keys, and certificates.   I figured that apple servers would re-create the necessary keys, & Certificates.    I was right.  

Certificates that re-appeared after succesful login to facetime / imessage:

Apple Application Integration Certification Authority

Keys include:

Apple ID (YOUR ID HERE) key

Apple ID (YOUR ID HERE) key

iMessage Encryption Key

iMessage Signing Key

I also deleted application Passwords that were stored including:

Apple ID Authentication

Apple Persistant State Encryption

ids: identity-rsa-key-pair-signature-v1

ids: identity-rsa-private-key

ids: identity-rsa--public-key

ids: message-protection-Key

IDS: (YOUR APPLE ID) -AUTHTOKEN

IDS_temporary: (YOUR APPLE ID)

Basically went in and deleted everything apple / icloud related

I then had to sign into icloud servies and was finally able to sign into facetime and imessage

I connect to different routers throughout the day through Wi-Fi.  Would I have to do this with everyone?  At school I connect to many different ones during the week, another at work, and another at home.

I have also deleted some other keys that steveSuro mentioned, but that didn't work either.  I can login to iMessages, but it grays out my status options and sending messages still does not work.  I would go to an Apple store, but my AppleCare has run out.

The Certificates in the Keychain will be independent of where you are using your computer.

The Auth tokens listed with your Apple ID for FaceTime, Messages and possibly the Game Center use your Serial number of your computer to verify it's "you" that is using the app.

Again this is independent of location or network being used.

If you are referring to my post on the 10th then the Public DNS server will have to be added to each Location setting you may have set up in System Preferences > Network.

I have reset the keychain and can now log in to iMessage and it shows online and acts like it is send messages but they don't actually send and I can't receive still...any other ideas?

Hi,

In Applications/Utilities launch the Console App.

Retry sending iMessages in the Messages and and see if the Console app lists any of it's messages about the Messages app.

Hi,

I have asked the Hosts to remove the actual IDs.

The message seems to say that your contacts ID does not state country.

This is important for iPhone Numbers  (in that the +1 for America for instance has to be included) but not for Apple IDs that are being used.

It seems to be talking about an item that cannot be decrypted (ever) at the end but I was under the impression this was an outgoing call.

The info is a little too cryptic for me to suggest anything.

First time posting, but as suggested, I opened up Keychain, searched all items for "Facetime" and "messages" and deleted them all. Opened messages, ented my passcode and it worked!
