Q: Sent items show twice on MAIL (IMAP)

Hi everyone!

I need your help!

As the title suggests, I am experiencing an issue with the Mail app on my MacBook Pro. A few days ago, Hotmail/Outlook announced they started supporting IMAP and I thought that it would be the great way to sync my mail across all my devices (MacBook Pro + iPhone) and proceeded to set up my account as an IMAP account on all of them. Everything went flawlessly... Until today. Indeed, I noticed that when sending e-mails from Mail (OS X), the sent items would show up twice in the sent folder. It is all the more annoying since it syncs across my devices and I get these duplicates on my iPhone and on the web interface as well. Strange thing though, this does not happen when sent from my iPhone (or from the web for that matter), indicating clearly that the issue lies within the Mail app for OS X.

So my question is: does anyone know how to fix this and still let me sync my sent items across all my devices? What are the appropriate settings that I have to use to properly achieve this?

Thank you very much for your help!

Kind regards,

MacBook Pro (13-inch Early 2011), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

IOS devices and Hotmail use EAS (ActivSync) change them back, they already sync.

Remove the Imap account from your Mac and make it again, here is an info sheet.

    Thank you Csound1,

Unfortunately, I think I did not make myself clear enough in my first post. When I said I set up IMAP 'across all my devices', I meant on my MacBook Pro only, since the iPhone configures itself automatically to use EAS as you rightfully pointed out in your post.

The info sheet you have shared proved to be very useful when I first set up my account! Indeed, I had followed its instructions carefully. Needless to say that I have tried deleting and setting up my account countless times.

Microsoft are having issues with their service (new service) keep trying or just wait.

Microsoft trying to fix issues with Outlook.com's new IMAP support ...

FYI, I use the same settings, for me they work.

    Hello

I have the same problem as Valedictorian. And I don´t think it is a problem with Microsoft's service. I think it is its configuration. Microsoft, as does Google's Gmail, automatically make a copy of the sent message when using its smtp server to send mail.

But the Mail app also makes a copy of the message to the designated Sent folder, which explains why the items are duplicated.

The duplicating items problem is solved when unchecking a box in Mail's settings for accounts to keep sent messages on the server. But the problem is that when doing this, the Sent folder is not treated anymore as a Sent folder, but as a regular folder.

If I select the folder and use the option of using it as a Sent folder, the aforemetioned checkbox is automatically selected so sent emails are duplicating again.

Is there another setting I am missing so that the Sent folder is always treated as it is, but not duplicating emails?

That is exactly what I experienced lately, dacastan!

I have the feeling that the whole duplicate sent item problem stems from that little box in Mail's settings. But then again, why would I want to uncheck that box if the point of having an IMAP e-mail account is to have one's items stored on the server for other devices to retrieve them?

you can uncheck that box and still have all mail synced (even sent emails), but what I don't like is that the Sent folder is not treated as a sent items folder anymore by Mail if you do that. For me, one could uncheck that box, and should still have the option to use the Sent folder as a sent items folder without Mail keeping a copy of the sent email and there would be no duplicates. But as I said in my previous post, that seems not possible. Unless someone else know how?

I have the same issue as well

Another issue I have noticed is that even when I uncheck the "Store sent messages on the server..." and save,  it automatically pops back to being checked after a few seconds.

    I experience this issue, too...

First I thought it's realted either to OSX Mail or MS Outook (for Mac) as I have both mail clients in use with IMAP Hotmail/Outlook configuration. Unfortunately it's not...

Conclusion, I am desperately lookin' forward to a solution for this, too!!!

    I have the same problem...

I tried to create a rule to delete one of the messages but couldn't get it to work without deleting them all!

I hope someone comes up with a fix soon.

Yes it is true. This is new in Maveriks. You can't uncheck the option to store sent messages.

The fix should come from Apple, to treat the Outlook.com IMAP accounts in a similar way to Gmail IMAP accounts.

When MS get the renamed Hotmail working we will see, right now it is junk, nothing Apple do will fix that.

The option to uncheck Save on Server still works (with Imap systems that work)

    Hi all.

I have the same issue with a little story. I was using Sparrow to handle my Outlook.com mail and noticed the same thing, sent items were shown double in the sent folder, first I thought it was a Sparrow problem so I changed to Mail, when I finished syncing the whole account I started sending e-mails to my different contacts and noticed the same problem, my emails were showing twice in the sent folder.

It is not a Mail settings problem, a Sparrow problem or any email app for that matter, it is something in the Outlook.com settings that creates a copy of the sent email, one with the receiver's name and one with my name. It is a Microsoft problem (one more to add to the long list.. ) and one we hope they'll fix soon. For now, lets keep it double.
