Q: MBA mid-2013 wakes from sleep every minute on Mavericks

After upgrading to Mavericks my MBA mid-2013 constantly wakes up from sleep every minute during the night draining battery to 0%.I did syslog | grep -i "Wake reason" and the result is "?" for each logged wake event. There are few more reports on this all over the Internet with slight variations. This happens

while on battery and I did try SMC reset. Any tips? It's gettig quite frustrating. Screenshot 2013-10-30 13.58.55.png

Tried deleting the sleep image and enable it again, but problem still active. Strange thing is that is not happening every time. Most of the time it does but there are moments it is not happening and battery doesn't drain after 3 hrs of sleep.

The only way to solve this would be debugging at kernel level and check what the wake reason is.

So Apple support had me do an SMC reset, and that appears to have fixed the issue.  Here's how to do it:

    • Shut down the computer.
    • Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
    • On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.  Hold them down for 5 seconds.  Nothing should happen (if the laptop starts up then you've done it wrong).
    • Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
      Note
: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

I am having a similar issue with my 2012 Retina MBP. It wakes every minute. Console log is flooded with "kernel[0]: Wake reason: XHC1," which is related to USB. In my case, it appears to be related to my USB hub, and my MBP wakes even if no devices are plugged into the hub. Sometimes my external drives connected to the hub will eject on sleep.

If the hub is not connected, my MBP sleeps fine.

PRAM and SMC reset did not fix this issue, and my 10.9 install was fresh.

I did NOT have this issue in 10.8.

This is very annoying, as I have to shutdown my MBP when I am away for an extended period of time.

Nothing is plugged into my MBA 2013, not even a power cord. SMC reset also did not solve the issue, also not a completely new install.

I've been having some discussion with Apple Support regarding this on-going issue.

From my logs, every time my MacBook Air (2013) wakes itself up when on battery shows the initial wake reason as "EC.SleepTimer".  Then, it continues each minute thereafter to have "Wake reason: ?" until the battery dies.

    Apple Support told me that:

"The EC.sleeptimer is a normal message and it has to do with the unit communicating with USB devices on the bus, which include bluetooth, keyboard and trackpad."

This suggests a driver issue in Mavericks or similar.

<snip of my log for "wake reason">

I agre with another poster who speculates that this is a driver problem.  Something is waking up the MBA that should not be allowed to do so.

Just checked - it seems as if a PRAM reset makes the macbook work - it has just slept overnight.

Woke it up this morning, 3% drained or thereabouts. I then closed the lid.

Woke it up this afternoon... 70% drained, it had woken up every 1 minute with the following sequence (apologies for formatting). I do not have anything plugged in to my MBA... only thing occasionally plugged in is an external HD for time machine. PowerNap is officially turned off, so it shouldn't be waking for anything...

    And the latest news...

Currently raised a case with Apple, recommended trying in safe mode: no difference alas. I've got a phone call slot so hopefully that will move things along.

In the meantime: I was checking everything in System Preferences, when I noticed that when selecting Network, it mentioned "new hardware - thunderbolt bridge". I had nothing plugged in at the time, so must be a new driver c/o Mavericks or similar?

Selected defaults, and left the machine...

After 3 hours (approx) it did actually sleep. Might have been a fluke, but worth trying.

Could be another "worked first time, then next sleep failed..." ?

Apple rang on schedule - went through PRAM & & SMC reset; then deleted:

    com.apple.PowerManagement.plist

(Stored in: Macintosh HD / Library / Preferences / SystemConfiguration)

Just looked around the web, this is mentioned in: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/resetenergysaverprefs.html

So seems a good way to fix any power issues...

Fingers crossed. The MBA has just slept for 1 hour without anything wierd happening, I'll post again once its had an overnight sleep...

I tried the latest suggestion posted by dr-grim but result was the same.   Waking up with wake reason "EC.SleepTimer" then followed by inability to fall back asleep with "Wake Reason: ?".

If I sleep for 1-2 hours, there is no issue.  If more than 2-3 hours sleep, the above sequence starts.

    So frustrating!

Well, after leaving my MBA to sleep overnight it... woke up after exactly 3 hours. So, time to re-raise the call with apple (sigh).

Highly suspicious. 3 * 60 * 60 = 10800 which matches "standbydelay" as listed by "pmset -g"; current settings are as follows. Also noted that "ttyskeepawake" is set - that's also suspicious. I'm going to try setting that to 0 and retrying...

    Active Profiles:

    Battery Power                    1*

    AC Power                    2

    Currently in use:

    standbydelay         10800

    standby              1

    halfdim              1

    hibernatefile        /var/vm/sleepimage

    darkwakes            0

    disksleep            10

    sleep                1

    autopoweroffdelay    14400

    hibernatemode        3

    autopoweroff         1

    ttyskeepawake        1

    displaysleep         2

    acwake               0

    lidwake              1

...just finished chat with Apple support; recommended trying safe mode (sounds like I hadn't actually triggered this before).

    However.

Just changed standbydelay to 120 (so I only have to wait 2 minutes before insanity strikes). And also set ttyskeepawake to 0.

    (i.e. sudo pmset -a ttyskeepawake 0)

So far, after 2 minutes, it... actually sleeps !!!

Feeling brave I then changed hibernatemode to 25 (and set displaysleep to 1, as otherwise it would trigger after the machine slept - a warning from pmset).

Still sleeping soundly after "standbydelay" exceeded & triggering a deep sleep...

Hopefully this is actually it... I'll report back after 24 hours or so...
