Q: My iphone 5 suddenly died.

My iphone 5 suddenly died. It will not turn on when I plug it in. It was working well the night before and nothing happened to it over night.  The battery was charged.

Turn it off occasionally. This will clear its memory. If it is very frequent, however, take @flatmap's advice.

Hi, use this method (RJM's method):

    1) identify the 'mute'/'silent' button above the volume button

    2) toggle/move the silent button back and forth twice, then hold home and power button together for some seconds ( 5 to 20 seconds)

    3) if apple logo does not appear, repeat steps 1 and 2 a few times.

    4) in my own case, after repeating steps 1 and 2 a few times, i pressed home and power buttons together and toggled the silent button a few times without releasing the other 2 buttons. It took several attempts but it worked. My brother had abandoned the phone after it died about 6 months ago.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you RJM.  Your solution to this little problem has helped out so many people and regardless of what the guy who knows everything has to say, I did try to reboot before I tried your solution and it did not work.  Thank you for your post!

@Lawrence Finch Well, I don't think it's completely comparable to PCs. In case of a computer, be it a Windows machine or a MacBook, you either get a BSOD, or a kernel panic message, anything. In case of an iOS crash I and other people here experienced, you get NOTHING. Just a black screen, pressing the Home button or the Power button doesn't work so without looking into the manual you won't guess what's going on and what you need to do. This is a problem.

Also, it hasn't happened to me even once during the two years I've used my iPhone 4. I switched to the 5s yesterday and today it crashed in this way... Boy, that was scary (mainly because of no feedback!).

My iPhone 5 just stopped charging, then my phone died. I diffrent cables (which is apple) and when its plugged in i just get the apple logo keeps flashing up (blinking) but the phone wont continue to boot. Is this a hardware problem? Before it died the phone bacame so hot when I was using the cellular data.

It is likely to be a hardware problem, but you can try a restore from Recovery Mode: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
