Mac OS XHave you checked the Hold switch to make sure it is not ON?
Does the iPod still appear in iTunes when connected?
If you are using automatic syncing to load the iPod, all of the songs on the iPod should be in your iTunes library. If you are managing content manually, and there are songs on the iPod that are not in your iTunes library, that is risky, because an iPod can be broken or lost.
You cannot use iTunes to transfer song files from iPod to computer, except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store. However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer. If you do an Internet search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links. (The CNET article seems to be popular.)
Before attempting any repair, you should offload those songs and add them to your current iTunes library, so that all of your songs are in one place.
