My new iMac is experiencing random kernel panics. Here is my etre readout. Can anyone give me any advice about this problem? Also note that the list includes my WD Thunderbolt drive, but the drive does not appear on the desktop and Time Machine can't perform back-ups on it. Another day, another problem.

What we need to see is a panic log, not Etrecheck output: Mac OS X- How to log a kernel panic.

Remove all your peripherals except Apple keyboard and mouse. Uninstall all third-party driver software such as whatever installed:

              HWNetMgr - Path: /Library/StartupItems/HWNetMgr

              HWPortDetect - Path: /Library/StartupItems/HWPortDetect

              NUDC - Path: /Library/StartupItems/NUDC

Boot the computer into Safe Mode after which boot normally. Do you still have kernel panics?

Do the kernel panics occur while in Safe Mode?

  • 4. Re: kernel panics
    Peter Best1 Level 1 Level 1 (40 points)

I'm unable to answer that question because the shut-downs occur only occasionally and intermittently and I have no idea whether the machine hasn't experienced one because I'm in safe mode or because not enough time has passed. I've never experienced a kernel panic while at the computer, only seen the evidence for it when I try to use the machine after being away for a while. Nonetheless I'm wondering more and more whether the problem is connected to the disappearing Thunderbolt drive, since after disconnecting that yesterday I haven't had a recurrence of the kernel panics. It's early days, but..... Western Digital are a strange outfit. I put the question to them after filling in an extraordinarily detailed support form and got a support number which as far as I can tell is impossible to use to further query the situation. If I want to ask a question I have to fill in the detailed form again and get another number. They promised a response within 2 business days but it's been five times that long. This is a more and more familiar routine. Don't even think of asking me about Evernote, which I've abandoned. I guess it's easier when you're in the US and can pick up a phone and dial support.

Your KP's are related to one of the following:

    com.intego.kext.VirusBarrierKPI 10.6.18

    com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower 1.5.3

My guess is the antivirus application is the first suspicious item. Not only are antivirus applications unnecessary for OS X they are a waste of system resource and tend to create more problems than they solve. There are zero viruses for OS X and almost insignificant amount of malware that can easily be handled by keeping your computer up-to-date with Software Update.

The next step is to use the developers instructions for uninstalling your antivirus app and then restart the computer normally and see how it operates.

  • 6. Re: kernel panics
John Galt Level 8 Level 8 (36,425 points)

I understand; the reason for booting Safe Mode would be to confirm that a few system modifications are the cause of the kernel panics.

To address the problem start by removing Intego according to its instructions. Intego offers no obvious way to uninstall it, so if you are unable to locate an uninstaller program then you must download its installer .dmg file which contains its uninstaller. Unfortunately Intego's uninstaller is not completely effective and leaves components behind, but they ought to be inert and should no longer affect your Mac.

Of the popular "anti-virus" programs tested with Mavericks, Intego's was the only one I rated unacceptable due to its horrendous effect on performance. Using Intego did not result in kernel panics though, but you should still get rid of it. It's awful.

Next, uninstall Soundflower. It has not been updated in years and its support forum is moribund. Their site contains uninstallation instructions that are easy to follow. You can always install it again, should it not be the direct cause of your kernel panics.

Next, uninstall any and all Western Digital SmartWare or other disk drive utilities. Using their products and similar products from other hard disk drive manufacturers will result in data loss with Mavericks. Such utilities offer no benefit and are never a good idea to install.

Next, uninstall anything obtained from Cnet including "tech tracker". Never download anything from Cnet. Their site has been a source for malware of various descriptions, and should be avoided altogether. If you want to download software that is not available from the Mac App Store then go directly to the developer's website, never from Cnet, download dot com, Mac update dot com or anything like them. Their revenue is derived from advertisers that sell junk that will only cause misery, such as CleanMyMac.

    Next, uninstall CleanMyMac:

CleanMyMac2 belongs to a broad category of time- and money-wasters capable of causing system corruption that can only be rectified by reinstalling OS X, restoring from a backup, or completely erasing your system and rebuilding it from the ground up. Get rid of it and test your Mac for operation. If it does not perform normally, the possibility that CleanMyMac resulted in system corruption must be considered.

According to its web site CleanMyMac2 is supposed to uninstall itself:

"The easiest way to completely uninstall CleanMyMac 2 is by using CleanMyMac 2 on itself.

To remove CleanMyMac 2 from your Mac:

    1. Open CleanMyMac 2.
    2. Proceed to the Uninstaller module.
    3. Find CleanMyMac 2 in the list of apps found by the module.
    4. Click Complete Removal in the Smart Selector panel to mark the application file and all it related items for removal.
    5. Click Uninstall.
    6. Confirm that you are going to remove the app in the newly appeared message.

    That's it!"

Apparently it may not be that simple though, as at least one user reported that it did not work, and required manual removal: Extreme Battery Drainage

Whatever damage it inflicted by it or similar programs apparently required more work to correct. In such cases an "erase and install" followed by laboriously migrating individual apps and files may be the most expedient solution.

You have some work to do. If you need more help write back.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. I've uninstalled all the recommended applications apart from Soundflower, which I can't find in the applications folder and can't find using Spotlight. I had the WD software on my Mac because I needed it to perform some aspect of the installation of the Thunderbolt drive, but it's now gone, not just because John Galt suggested I get rid of it, but because the WD forum says there are issues with their thunderbolt drives and Mavericks. Some Thunderbolt owners were notified of these issues, which apparently involve spontaneous re-formatting and data alteration and warrant the disconnection of WD Thunderbolt drives from the system, but I wasn't. I wonder whether the issues cut both ways and could be the cause of my kernel panics? I wish WD would tell me what's going on. The Thunderbolt drive is my Time Machine drive and I have no other drive with sufficient capacity to take on that role. In the meantime I'm using SuperDuper to maintain a backup in case of disaster. If any other forum participants know how I can use my existing case number to contact Western Digital about an existing issue I'd love to hear about it. After hours of fiddling about on their website the only way I can find to contact them is to start another support case with a new case number. Hmmmm.

The kernel panics may have been caused by any number of third party system modifications or their interaction with one another, but if I had to suggest one single cause it would be Intego despite the fact it did not crash during testing. If your Mac crashes again post a new report, and I will attempt to find specific uninstallation instructions for Soundflower.

FYI this user was also using CleanMyMac2 as well as WD software and eventually resolved his problems without having to erase everything and start over: Slow since upgrading!!! help please

The eventual action required reinstalling OS X but doing so will not erase any of your existing data.

Just returned to the computer to find it shut down after a kernel panic. I had uninstalled all the suggested things apart from Soundflower and reinstalled Mavericks. What's the difference this time? This time I had the WD Thunderbolt drive connected, showing up on the desktop, and backing up to Time Machine. After the restart the drive had disappeared from the desktop and the Time Machine backup was listed as "delayed". The Thunderbolt drive is looking to me more and more likely to be the cause of all these problems. I wish Western Digital would tell me that that's the case but given their performance to date I don't expect to hear from them within the next month.

Probably, but post the new report when you get a chance.

    Well I'll be.......

I uninstalled them all using CleanMyMac2, before uninstalling it. I guess it's back to the drawing board, but I'll be interested to see whether I get another panic now that I've disconnected the WD drive.
