Jun 26, 2013 9:29 AM in response to wrecktifyby babyaligators,Well, same issue as everyone else.
Brought it to Apple, couldn't find anything, just said "You know, it's old." and said I could pay $150 for a refurb.
Also commented on the fact that my phone still looks brand new. Which it does. I'm neurotic about my electronics. Not a speck on the phone, scratch nick nothing. Never been dropped. Never been abused. It's just the way I am with my electronics. So I know that this is not a "user error" or misuse of the equipment.
Cardboard trick is working for now.
So many people have the same issue, and this piece of cardboard is what fixes it.
What this tells me: faulty manufacturing. I used to work at Dupont as a waveguide fabricator, and several other positions for producing polymer-based planar lightwave circuits, fiber-optic components such as VOA switches, and silica-based devices such as AWG. I know standard of quality. I would not stamp this iPhone the equivalent of ISO 9000. For that, 99.9% is not good enough. And this is not good enough.
And what frustrates me is that this is a $700+ piece of equipment. Granted I didn't pay that much up front, but I entered into a 2 year contract to subsidize that cost. So, I did pay it in full. That was my goal, to pay it in full, and after those 2 years I would have my own equipment that I could bring to whatever carrier I would choose.
But Apple is telling me they don't expect the equipment to work after the two year period that it takes to pay for it? That now that it's mine paid in full, it's "Too old" and I should expect these kinds of issues?
Look how many people have this issue! Not just in this forum,. Google "iPhone 4 nobody can hear me." Unbelievable. And there would be even more if we, in general, weren't so "consumer hungry" for the next thing that so many of traded up as soon as our 2 year contract ended. If more people held onto their iPhone 4, just imagine how many more people would be having this issue.
I apologize for wanting to keep my old phone and expecting it to last a reasonable amount of time.
Frustrated.

Jun 30, 2013 2:06 AM in response to Pamela2121by jephys,I face the same issue. Skype and all other application working perfect except phonecall. I can hear all but other party can't hear. I just watch the below video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jhWxYTVxe4 then without open the back case I just knock two times 2 inch below the back side camera.. Now it is perfectly working. this remedy May be for temporary. If again the same problem repeated i will open the case and will insert the paper.
Thanks for all. Jephy Sebastian.

Jul 12, 2013 8:05 AM in response to babyaligatorsby Marbilste,Same exact issue!
Tthis is obviously a known issue and a disgrace there is still no solution!
The first time this happened, I thought my phone was broke! I went on eBay and purchased a new one.
Same thing happened with replacement phone. Called apple and asked for help. I told the representative to refer back to these discussions. He refused to admit it was a known issue. I told him there should be a recall!
he said I can send it in for $199 and they will fix/replace it!
i Answer the phone and the caller can't hear me but I can hear them perfectly.
WHen it does work, after a lengthy conversation...it will quit working and they can't hear me!
how can we get apple to issue a recall!!!

Jul 15, 2013 6:29 AM in response to Marbilsteby darlingallison8,I had the same issue. It literally happened out of no where. Thankfully, I was still under warranty at the time, so I was able to get a new phone at the Apple store. It also might help if you use the headphones that came with your phone (with the microphone). It's annoying to have to use them, but they're a good temporary fix until you can get a new phone.

Jul 15, 2013 9:38 AM in response to darlingallison8by babyaligators,Thanks, Darlingallison8,
But for those of us with the same problem, using the headphones doesn't fix the issue. You may have had an actual microphone failure. For us, the microphone works, you can still record audio. The fix with the piece of cardboard suggests that a chip is loosing contact. Usually due to solder softening up and separating.
Jerphys, I don't suggest knocking the phone, that will eventually make the issue worse if indeed it is what I mentioned above.
Sigh. I remember back in the day Apple taking responsibility when it should. Even when they didn't really have to. I once had an old ibook. There was an issue with the motherboard. Apple issued a recall 7 years after I had purchased it (which was around the time the issue would present itself.) 7 years! That was above and beyond.
This is below and way back. Makes me miss the Apple that was trying to be the best and number 1. Now that they are...I dunno.

Jul 16, 2013 10:08 AM in response to 1nsa1niby babyaligators,Appreciate it 1nsa1ni, but for most of us that doesn't do the trick either. After exhausting all possibilities (software first) the only answer is the "cardboard trick" which is simply applying pressure to a chip in the phone.

Aug 30, 2013 2:26 PM in response to wrecktifyby yoyogirl63,My iPhone 4s was "under warranty" when the ON/OFF button broke. They sent me a "new one," only to find out after THREE DAZE of setting this thing up that it is a "reconditioned, like new" piece of crap. I have lost over 12 calls today, can't hear people talking on it, on and on. I've been with Verizon for 8 years, have 5 lines with them, and they won't do anything. They said take it to Apple and complain. Right. Like that will do anything. Sounds like this phone is junk. I should have kept my Samsung. All the things I love about my iMAC DO NOT apply to the iPhone. I've been duped. Thanks for all the posts, everyone. At least I know it's not just me pulling my hair out today. ARRRRGGGGHHH!!

Sep 20, 2013 8:24 AM in response to babyaligatorsby Burnitdown,I'm having the same problem as everyone else here with my iPhone 4, obviously. Started a few weeks back. My boyfriend randomly stopped being able to hear me on a call, even though I continued to be able to hear him perfectly. We hung up. Called him back multiple times, same problem. I figured it was on his end, until this started happening to me with nearly every person I talk to. Typically the person can hear me fine for 3-10 minutes, and then they reportedly hear loud static and can't hear me anymore. I don't hear the static and I hear them perfectly.
Rebooting the phone used to fix the problem long enough to be able to finish the phone call, but now rebooting the phone doesn't help at all. I haven't taken it into the AT&T store yet because I was afraid they would tell me the phone was "too old" since I bought it 2.5 years ago. My phone is also starting to do all sorts of other annoying glitchy things, like apps shutting down on me or freezing periodically. I am seriously beginning to believe that these phones were intentionally made to last 2 years and that's it, so you're forced to keep buying new ones.
I'm going to try the cardboard fix... really hoping it helps! This problem is INCREDIBLY frustrating.

Nov 15, 2013 3:12 PM in response to pudjam666by The gav man,Had this problem also, I changed the loudspeaker and no difference, I then changed the ear piece and the dock connector and still the other person could not hear me. Actually the problem got worse with an extremely annoying echo and static crackling. Then ready to admit that I finally failed to be unable to fix an iphone which I've done hundreds of times I decided one last attempt, I updated the phone to the latest iOS 7.0.4 and boooooom she working perfectly. Apple get your fingers out and start helping people otherwise Samsung gonna take your customers.

Dec 10, 2013 12:25 PM in response to wrecktifyby darkmatter20,Only thing thats worked for me was to cover with a bit of tape the noise suppression mic (small pinhole on top of phone, next to audio jack). Take the tape off and no one hears me during phone calls, put it back on and everyone can hear me.....(I already had iOS 7.0.4 installed) but then maybe other people solved this some other way...
It's also cheaper than going out and buying a galaxy phone....
