I bought an iPhone 4 two weeks back and it crashed. Thanks to this post, I was able to turn it on. Is this a fault in the device and should I exchange it for a new one?

It is most likely not a fault in the iPhone, but rather the sort of bug that exists in all complex systems. As I said in an earlier post:

iOS crashed. It happens at times to all computers. Windows Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), Mac or Linux kernel panic, IBM mainframe sysabend. Holding HOME and SLEEP reboots the phone (except Apple likes to say "resets the phone"). It's probably a good idea to do this periodically (weekly) even if the phone hasn't shut off, especially if you never turn it completely off by holding the Sleep button until the "Slide to power off" message appears.

I seem to be having a problem with my Iphone 4, it shut off and now only flashes me the apple logo when i plug it in, i have done the whole itunes reset and restore thing but when i unplug it from itunes it goes back to doing the same thing. I have done multiple resets in one night and nothing is working. I don't know what else to do except send it to Apple to get repaired or bring it in to my carrier store

I just had this issue happen to me. My iphone 4 is 2 years old. I have never had this issue before. Found this post, held the power button and home button together and my phone is now back on and working. I was thinking it was from the IOS 7.0.3 update but seeing that this issue goes several years back  then that's not the case. So has anyone found out what causes this?

It happens when iOS crashes. Like a Windows Blue Screen of Death, Mac or Linux Kernel Panic, or mainframe sysabend. It usually means that memory is too fragmented to continue. It is more likely to happen if you never shut down your phone completely by holding the SLEEP button until "Slide to Power Off" appears. Shutting down cleans up memory.

What you are doing by holding both buttons is rebooting the phone.

Only the person who posted the original message in the thread can award points. Which is why avid point-seekers only respond to original posts (OPs). Points aren't that important to me; solving problems is what I like. Besides, 20,000 points plus $2.50 will get you a ride on a NYC subway or bus The real benefit of points is having the opportunity to meet other high-point members and some of the shadowy Hosts in periodic get-togethers in cities around the world. Plus a private forum.

Thank God...this worked for me. For a second there I thought it would have to take it for service.
