Failing to upgrade to 10.9 from 10.8.5 - states 'An error occurred'

Using a mac mini, tried to upgrade from 10.8.5 to 10.9 using the Software Update feature. Download was working well, then after approx 2.4GB downloaded, the dialog changed. Lost all text from the button 'Pause' and some red text appeared next to the button stating 'An error occurred'.

Have tried requesting the Software Update again, however the App store doesnt see any new updates. System preferences still show that 10.8.5 is installed. Tried rebooting the mac and requesting the SW update again, but to no avail.

Any ideas anyone?

Mac mini, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Mavericks is not an update, it's an upgrade.

Open the App Store then type Mavericks in the search field top right corner of that window then select OS X Mavericks from the search results.

Mavericks requires a high speed broadband connection.

The file is approximately 5.35GB's in size. If you are using a slow connection, the file may time out.
