Q: Mavericks corrupts external hard drive

My WD MyBook studio 2TB (fw800) suddenly shows up empty on my desktop after a Mavericks upfrade on my mid 2009 mbp.

 

Disk Drill is now scanning the WD, and the files are there, about 1,4 TB of it...

 

How do I get the disc structure back?

 

I have no Mountain Lion OS-mac to test the WD in..

 

I had a bootable Mountain Lion on the WD, could that be the problem?

 

In Disk Drill MyBook has four units; EFI(200Mb), MyBook(1,8Tb), Unallocated 128Mb and Lost partition (200Mb)

    There is a lesson for us in how Google stores data.  It's easy: keep three copies of everything on separate disks.  Keep one copy off-site.

    @Scooter NJ Sorry to hear that. But it is not surprising since it appears that you were using the WD drivers with RAID partitioning. I'm sure you have already read this but just in case

    I suspect the reason your WD 4T is only showing up now as a 2T drive is because the 4T is actually 2x2T. In other words the case contains two seperate 2T drives. And depending on your RAID settings the 2nd 2T drive is a copy of the 1st 2T drive.

     

    This style of raid is aimed primarily at physical drive failures. But is is still vulnerable to logical failures like directory corruption due to a software glitch.

     

    IMO the drive problems you (and other WD users that are using the WD drivers/software) are experiencing may be being triggered by the same Mavericks glitch as I'm seeing on the Seagates, using Apple's drivers, but the results are very different with respect to data loss. Even when my Seagates won't mount they still have the data intact. And more importantly the directory structure is still viable to get to that data without running disk recovery software, at least on macs running 10.4.11.

     

    What I suspect happens to WD drives when "there can be cases of a repartition and reformat of their Direct Attached Storage (DAS) devices without customer acknowledgement which can result in data loss." Is that as part of the repartition procedure the directory on one or both of the 2T drives is wiped but the data is still there and can be recovered with software like you are using.

    Who mentioned google data storage?  Not I

     

    I don't trust them with data collections.

     

    Joe Blow and Sally Smith common users dont likely need online storage or a private website however its very cheap and a perfect 3rd storage option and a very handy asset for even most users

     

    ...and importantly is utterly immune from this occurrence of data corruption

    You said you test ran DR3 which showed original filenames and structure. Which option did you select with DR3?

    Did you select the drive or the volume? And which task did you choose Quick Scan, Deep Scan or Deleted File Scan?

    Your post was just the convenient reply link.  Don't take it personally.

     

    I'm not presenting Google as the end-all in data backup. That said, I've been using Gmail since near its inception and I've never lost a thing.  But that's not the point. What I'm suggesting is the lesson: keep three copies and one of those copies off-site.  It's totally compatible with what you're suggesting.

     

    Joe and Sally ought not be running a RAID, either.  (Companies supplying cheap RAID for the masses is not doing anyone a favor.) They should be using some cloud backup, or as you suggest, a website is another option, the downside being how to push the data there.  Are Joe and Sally ready for using an FTP client?  And how does one automate it with ease?  That's what makes a cloud service attractive since they all provide an automated client.

     

    Anyway, like most things, there is room for disagreement on how best to manage data.

    Basilic - I am doing a Deep Scan of the entire drive.    It's only 20% done now but when I started one earlier and stopped it after about 1%, I had filenames that I recognized (song names, jpg pic names that were as taken by the DSLR, etc.)

    Yes, simplex FTP free APP clients are drag and drop. Joe and Sally can do it

     

    great one is called Filezilla.

    I wouldn't call any Cloud genuine storage, same reason Mr Wozniak doesn't trust it.

     

    genuine ownership is important and Cloud isn't it.

     

     

    There are automatic FTP clients but Ive never used them

    an update to my situation:

     

    1. called WD to officially inform them of my case [everyone should do this]

    2. they gave me a licence number for Ontrack EasyRecovery software

    3. this software does nothing that no other recovery software does - it can see files but not directories or file names, so is useless to me recovering my 100,000+ music library

    4. called WD back to tell them, demading further action, before class action may commence - they said nothing else can be done, but with further insistance on them providing a solution, they said I would recieve a call back in next 24 hours with another 'option or offer'.

     

    My data is gone - I've accepted that. My feeling is everyone needs to pressure WD for a solution and someone needs to start a class action which I believe is a watertight winner. WD is terrified of a class action as they know it will be very costly.

    Such action cannot accomplish anything...

     

    all commercial HD come with a use agreement piece of paper stating "...not responsible for data loss"

    Can't you restore from a backup?  How many backup copies do you keep for your data?

    Just wondering how you made out with the Ontrack EasyRecovery software.  I was given a download link from Western Digital and a code.  But I get an error about a missing licence file as soon as I start the app.  Every option I tried results in looking / or not having a licence file - nowhere to just enter the number I was given.

     

    I sent a note to the support line.  Just wondering how you got on.

    Looking for a fix...I am having the same problem after Mavrick update.  My G-tech 500 cannot be seen.  It is running so I know it is working and so are my slim g-drives (these are visible) but the 500 is not visible.  I have read to boot with the firewire 400 or 800. I will give it a try!

    Probably best to try Data Rescue 3.   I'm sure those guys are laughing all the way to the bank on this issue ($99 if you really want your files) but try the demo first, then pay for the key if you think the files are what you need.   I'm trying that now.   12 hours to go...

     

    I will buy 2 4TB MyBook Studio (non-RAID) USB 3.0 units (they're cheap and fast enough for me, don't need T-bolt) and use these in tandem (one connected, one disconnected and stored elsewhere), and wipe Mavericks and reinstall ML on my MBP ('12 model) once this whole thing is over.

    In regards Data recovery software:

     

    Aside from the Easy Recovery software which Western Digital are providing licenses for in some cases - contact them if your issue was with WD drives or software you'll probably be able to get them to give you the license (eventually).

    Have you run TestDisk on a disk damaged by this issue? Did you manage to restore the partition table via TestDisk?

    I wondered if that would allow the catalog to be recovered and bring back the ./Spotlight-V100 metadata intact, it should be better than carving files with PhotoRec or other tools.
