Q: Breaking Magsafe Adapter

This picture below is one thing and one thing only, a repeated hard bend in the cabling of the charger. Its misuse of winding the cabling after use. Ive seen it a 1000 times on users computers.

Cables are pvc wrapped copper and insulating ground braiding, they are NOT meant to be:

A: hard folded

B: tight wrapped after use.

bend a paperclip about 20 times in one spot.....snap... same thing.

When rolling up your cord around the charger or otherwise to store in your case, ALWAYS leave a loose loop on the cord exiting the charger about 3-4 inches.

but it happened next to the connection for the computer. So it actually has nothing to do with the cable winding.

Same thing happens on both ends of the cabling. charger end and connector end.

Thats connector-neck folding.   Charger side or connector side doesnt matter.

due to hand oils and acids, the PVC coating DOES become brittle over time and heat (especially charger side).

Both ends of the cabling should be stored away with a loose loop.

I'm having a similar problem.  My power cord insulation keeps splitting (parallel to the length of the cord).  It's not right at the L-mag, but a few inches further down the cord.  This has happened twice now.  I've never wrapped the cord around the power adapter nor has there been any strain on it.  It seems to be caused just by normal, gentle, flexing.  I've wrapped both splits with electrical tape to protect the wires, but it's ugly and shouldn't be happening at all.  Something is obviously wrong with the insulation.  I guess I'll have to visit the Apple Store, where I imagine they'll tell me I need to buy another expensive power supply.  Oh, joy. 

This problem is still live and well.

I have 2 of these adapters. One purchased in Africa May 2012 and one here in the U.S. purchased Dec. 2012.

They have both split open. I taped one but it continues to split further down the cord.

Anyone had success in getting a replacement?

The whole thing started when the local Mac store lost my power adapter during a repair.

Well, problems here with the cord. It is the second one, not to mention the same issue with iPod/iPhone/iPad wires. It is absolutely crazy: this has never ever happened with any of my cords, charger of any kind (so please, even though we use it hard, this should not happen). And I have never paid attention to them the way I did for my Macbook Pro charger. It never moved from home, never wrapped, never folded or whatsoever. Anyway, it broke from both side (one week difference) in the past weeks.

On my previous Macbook, two of the first model also broke (one was the connector not plugging any more, the other from connectors and cable). This is a shame, this is a pure scandal because it is nothing else than a production fault. Apple really s... on that. Next time I visit an Apple store, I will go and complain about it.

What I notice since I switch to Apple is that with time, the price is not getting nicer but the quality is seriously getting worse. Too bad, considering how good were Apple computers.

You managed to find a Magsafe knockoff?  Where!?  I thought that was (one part of) why they made Magsafe in the first place - to patent it, not license it, and thus have a monopoly on their power cords.  Anybody know if the MagSafe patent ran out shortly before it was "improved" to MagSafe 2? (not much different - a bit thinner, maybe a bit smaller length-wise)
