You don't double click to rename files. Double click opens the file. To select a file name for editing, using only the mouse, first select the file, then single click on the name.

It depends on the Mouse preferences and the double click speed set. If you set the speed very fast the two slow clicks will enable renaming. stedman1's Enter key solutionis the best I've found.

You can indeed double click to edit names, or at least you have always been able to. On my other machines it works just fine but in my sole Mavericks machine it seldom works.

I had forgotten about that... thanks!
Would still like to figure out what the underlying issue is with the mouse clicks though.
Too much coffee, maybe
It is a bit of a distinction, but a double click would normally mean a rapid double click to open or launch a file. To edit the filename, one would normally click, pause, then click again - slightly different. If you do the latter too fast, it becomes the former.

It sounds like you have the same issue with the double-click to rename...
The reminder on the enter key will definitely be helpful in the interim but what I don't understand is where the issue is coming from as it didn't exist in previous iterations of OS X (pre-Mavericks) with the same double-click settings I am attempting to use now.
Also, as an addendum, using the Magic Trackpad exhibits the same issue, if it matters.

Entirely possible! I drink my coffee by the gallon...
Still, I have tried a sadly humorous waltz of increasing rapid clicks to attempt to determine the sweet spot, if it exists, in the speed between initial and subsequent click to get to the rename function. To no avail.
I do understand the distinction versus a speedy double click, but figured a thread title of "Click, Pause, Click..." might obfuscate the issue.
Anyway, I've even set the double-click to the fastest setting and it still doesn't work consistently.

My Mini does this too with Mavericks and the Magic Mouse, and it's sporadic. I'll be in the middle of renaming a folder of 20 files and suddenly it just stops.
I click a file. Wait a second, and click again, and NOTHING.
I press "Enter" and NOTHING.
I go down about four or five files in the list and click, wait a second, click again and I can rename it.
Go back to the file that wouldn't rename, and suddenly it works.
I've double checked to be sure that it in's a finger placement problem on the mouse. It seems to be something in Finder with Mavericks, because it DIDN'T happen with Mt. Lion.

Having the same issue as C F McBlob described. Never had a problem pre-Mavericks.
Did a web search trying to find if it was a known issue. Didn't find much but by the time I got back to Finder, I was suddenly able to use the slow double-click to rename the file I had previously been unable to rename. Very odd.
