Can anybody tell me how to get the contacts on my iphone 5 (IOS7) synced with my yahoo account?

iPhone 5, iOS 7.0.4

You can bring the contacts from the Yahoo account to the phone.  You can't go the other way from the phone.

And as I just said, you can bring the Yahoo contacts to the phone.  You can't go the other way from the phone.

    Why people won't read...

    <sigh>

Yes, you can sync Yahoo contacts with the phone.  You cannot cause the phone to magically transform other contacts into Yahoo contacts and send them back to Yahoo.

The OP thinks that they can take random contacts fom the phone's contacts list and turn them into Yahoo contacts.

    Reading comprehension, always a problem.

Yes.  A contact that is in Yahoo will sync to the Yahoo contacts in your phone.  If you change that contact, the changes will sync back to Yahoo.

Nowhere does it say that $RANDOM_CONTACT not presently in Yahoo will sync to Yahoo.

    It doesn't work that way.

You are not understanding ... try again:

If you started with contacts on your iPhone ONLY (i.e. not synced with any account), then enabling Yahoo contacts will NOT push those pre-existing contacts to Yahoo.  If you want the contacts that are on your iPhone associated with your Yahoo account, you need to use a 3rd party app to export your iPhone contacts and then import the app's output to Yahoo.

Once you have the contacts in Yahoo, and enabled on your iPhone for Yahoo, then changes are bi-directional just like you've been told.  But "bi-directional" does not mean that contacts which never existed in Yahoo will be synced to Yahoo just by enabling contact syncing to your Yahoo account.

    Make sense now?

    Now you understand.

Your iPhone contacts can exist only on your iPhone, but that is very risky and you're sure to lose them someday.  Getting them ported to Yahoo, GMail, iCloud, or any other host is highly recommended. If they only exist on your iPhone, then the way you port them to some other host is by using 3rd party apps, unless you want iCloud to host them (in which case you just turn iCloud contacts ON ... which is the only host that will "import" your contacts simply by enabling the Contacts setting).

I have them backup to the cloud for sure.

Keep in mind that "Backup" is not the same thing as syncing.

    • Backup is where you save your iPhone settings and some data for later recovery, if needed.  Your backup won't give you access to your contacts for daily use.  Also, your backup does not even guarantee you can recover your contacts if needed (i.e. if your contacts only lived on your iPhone, you may not be able to recover them entirely if you Restore and reload your backup).

    • Syncing your contacts is where you use an external host to store your contacts for daily use.  Also, if you ever had to erase your iPhone, you can still recover your contacts even without a backup if there is an external host for them.

So if you are not syncing your contacts to iCloud, only backing up your iPhone to iCloud, then yes you need to get them saved in a host like Yahoo.
