Q: Looking for setting to stop panel coming up when launching Firefox

Hello to those who have helped before.... the old eMac has been pressed into service for someone else. I have reinstalled 10.5 then downloaded (obviously old version) Firefox because that is what i'm used to doing. Now when wishing to open FF a panel comes up with a warning that FF is an app downloaded from the internet and do i wish to continue.  I have used FF for a few years as a download and can't recall this happening and i'm sure i would remember cos it is a nuisance. I always continue with the opening and all is fine but it is the same process every time.  It's fairly irrelevant in the scheme of things as to whether FF is used or not but i would love to know if it is possible to stop the question being asked. i presume it is a thing within the computer and nothing to do with FF itself?.... kind regards.....

eMac G4 PowerPC, Mac OS X (10.5.8), Firefox 3.6.28

    Hi again Sue,

No, nothing to do with FF at all.

    Disable warnings for all...

    http://osxdaily.com/2010/03/29/disable-the-are-you-sure-you-want-to-open-this-fi le-warning-dialogue-in-mac-os-x/

    Disable for one App...

    http://osxdaily.com/2010/09/12/disable-application-downloaded-from-the-internet- message-in-mac-os-x/

BTW, TenFourFox is the most up to date browser for our PPCs, they even have G4 & G5 optimized versions...

To the rescue again! greetings BDAqua. Thanks for reply. I am currently using my iMac so no point in using the links at the moment .. and thinking out loud... i will need to forward your reply to the eMac...  i haven't set up mac mail, but of course will be able to access your response on web mail on the eMac.

By the look of the links you have sent i would not have been able to find them? I searched 3 books as well as every Setting thing i could find on the computer.

Very interested in your comment re TenFourFox, first heard of it about 3 years ago but didn't know what to believe, i will now go ahead and give it a go on the eMac.  i tended to stick with FF cos i felt an old version of FF was better than old Safaris. Also a bit of habit.

Tried Opera but it jammed badly on the Emac so another reason to stick with FF/ Safari.

Might not get around to it for a couple of days, i will then come back and hopefully be able to score 10 for you.

I have learned i can't give 5 at this point as i won't be able to score the answer a second time.

Correct in 10.5.8, I think they relented in a later OS & had a pref in Security pref pane.

I prefer FireFox over Safari by far, but prefer TFF over FF.

SeaMonkey seems pretty fast also, with many options...

Correct, once a post is marked you cannot change it, & you're limited to one Solve & 2 Helpfuls.

Have had a look at the link for disabling warning for one application, excuse my ignorance but where do i type the command and do i replace the word application with name of firefox?  Have not done anything like this before. Cheers.

Had a go at downloading Seamonkey so i could "see". Most of it seemed to be about version 2 so downloaded that one but it won't work on my OS. The page i was working from didn't have anything i could see about system requirements.. something i am well used to looking for..  Had a look through Google at what was there and there is an earlier version but they warn against using it as it contains known vulnerabilites. They suggest getting the latest version.. well wouldn't we all if we just could..  What version did you have in mind? Will look further into TFF another time. Getting tired and might make wrong decisions.  There is a lot of advised reading for TFF and some of it will be over my head anyway.   C u later.

    I'm running SeaMonkey version 2.0.14 on 10.4.11 & 10.5.8...

I always muse a bit about Known vulnerabilities as compared to the Unknown & Known vulnerabilities in "Modern Browsers"... LOL, they issue patches almost weekly!

Open the Terminal.app & paste this line in...

    xattr -d -w com.apple.quarantine

Type a space after it then in Finder drag the App you want there, so you get a line that looks like this...

    QS2005-G5:~ bdaqua$ xattr -d -w com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Firefox3.6.8.app

Hmmm, -r didn't work, using -w did, bit not positive what that does, so...

I'd use the disable all one in terminal though, unless you think you'll go wild opening Apps you've downloaded from the Internet.

As far as i can tell there has been success with all these issues. I  thought it might be Terminal where the command had to go, i noticed reference to it somewhere but just wanted to be sure. As the name implies it is indeed fatal should you use it incorrectly. There was no response to the first two times i tried it so i realised the copy and paste probably wasn't working and i typed the words manually, i didn't think it worked then either cos it came up saying there was no attr value and offered help but i did it again then launched FF and the warning didn't show up so i left it at that.

I then disabled "All" and whoom that was good until i downloaded Seamonkey ( i don't like the name), upon opening seamonkey the warning showed again but when i closed and re opened it there wasn't a warning so progress has definitely been made.

I agree about the musings on known vulnerabilites etc even i have just pushed on with some things regardless but they can put the fear of God into us plebs... download this and there will be dire consequences but i see the world is still turning and NZ hasn't sunk further into the abyss.  Consequently Seamonkey and TFF are now residing on the eMac.

Last night i couldn't easily find your version of SM. it came up with 2.2 then i think i located version 1. I thought SM site was not easy to find system requirements and appropriate version.

Anyway i must print your replies at the local library and once again thank you. i hope the scoring has come through.
