If you have 2 columns on one page but want 1 column on the next page, you will need to insert a Page Break by going to Insert>Page Break and then changing the formatting back to 1 column. This should keep the original page at 2 columns and the new page at 1 column.

You don't say, as far as I can tell, whether you want to start a new page when you switch back to 1-column layout. It's not really necessary to begin a new page. Just type your next paragraph and select it. Then set the format of your selected paragraph back to 1-column.
That's what I did here...
