Q: Magic Mouse keeps losing connection

For the past several days, my magic mouse keeps losing connection to my MacBook Pro, and most of the time it won't even connect at all. I thought the batteries needed changing at first, but that didn't help either. I keep going into my Bluetooth settings to try and manually connect it but, again, it didn't work. Can anyone suggest ways to try to fix this problem?

This issue is SOLVED. See earlier posts. Simply insert some aluminum foil. That's it. never had problem later on. Crap engineering from Apple.

I feel compelled for the benefit of the community to add my two cents: aluminum foil worked for me, too. And what a relief. I was having a very frustrating time losing my connection—not something I'm accustomed to with Apple products. I have not lost the connection once since putting aluminum foil in underneath the negatives on both batteries.

I never used aluminum foil, but after beginning to use Apple's rechargable batteries, I haven't experienced the issue again. I'm fairly certain it is a combination slightly different battery sizes per the manufacture, and even varying tolerances in the Magic Mouse. I own 3, and one has more disconnectivity issues than the other two. One has never experienced them, and the other is intermittent. Energizers seem to work well, but I would recommend the Apple branded rechargables.

How strange. My mouse has been losing connection for a few days. It has been driving me mad, and I almost bought a new mouse. I had some rechargeable Duracell's in there. Swapped them for some Apple branded batteries and now it's working fine! I'm surprised that batteries can be different sizes. But so glad this works. Thanks, you saved me some money! :-P

Quick update ... tin foil was good but eventually they'd shake loose again. Brought it back to the Apple Store and it was replaced, no questions asked. New mouse working perfectly with all brands of battery . Seemed like they were used to it. A mouse that doesn't accept Duracell batteries is way too proprietary for me.

I will try the foil until I take it back to them and give me a working one. It has to be faulty, there is no other explanation.

Yes the supplied set up does have wriggle room and i solved it with your kind suggestions (paper between and above batteries,  but the next design should take this into account

I'm having this problem with my second MM (the first one failed after 2 years) on my MacBook Pro AND on the new Mac Mini in the house. It is definitely a loose battery problem not interference as some have identified.

Back in around 1975 I bought a Sinclair Scientific calculator. It was the first at a price a man-in-the-street could afford. Only trouble was the batteries needed a matchstick under the terminals to keep them working. Sinclair never made it to primetime because of the reliability issue and the Japanese wiped him out. Sad that 38 years later Apple haven't got it sorted.

You are quite right tjbarry,  the paper solved my problem,  but this would never happen if it was German designed and built.

German designed and built isn't what it used to be, since so may electronic parts are still sourced from China. Again, the Apple branded rechargeable seem to work the best with this mouse.

I have this for one month and was working ok with my macbook air. Yesterday i boght a mac mini and wanted to use the magic mouse as a remote but it keeps losing connection and moves jerky. Tried the paper and the aluminium foil (i find this offensive for an expensive mouse) with no luck. I had another cheap wireless logitech mouse which works perfect. Why is this hapening with the magic mouse? I cannot use it the way it is now.

I had it 1.5-2 meters away from mac mini. That was how i was using it. Moved it near the mini and now works. Is this the way this mouse suppose to work?

It should work at 2m from your mini. It has a quoted range of 33ft which is 10m which is the range for Bluetooth Class 2. I just tested mine with my Macbook Pro and it was still going strong when I lost visual contact out of the room at 6m. Another one was still working at a range of 9m on my mac mini.

I used folded aluminum foil under batteries for 18 months, with only occassional loss of signal.

Recently, my MM started losing signal constantly, so in addition to foil, I added a wad of folded paper inserted between the batteries and butterflying out on both sides to cover the backs. (description page 1 this discussion)

This new super-tight fit works perfectly - but next time I'm in town, I'll go buy Apple batteries.

    Oh, and merry xmas.
