Q: sending files back from color to fcp 7, but experiencing issues

I have four sequences in a FCP 7 project.  I sent three of them to color from FCP 7, completed my grading, rendered and sent back to FCP 7.  I did the same for the fourth sequence; however, when I opened this sequence in FCP 7 it had over written one of the other timelines media into the same clip lengths as the one I just sent back.  So it had media from another project, but with the same clip lengths as the I had just sent back from color.  I have never experienced this before.  I am working for an advertising agency and I am basically getting raw footage ready so that it can be send to an animation house who is going to be adding their animations, transitions and exporting the project.  This project is on a tight deadline and need to figure this issue out quickly.  Is this indiciative of corrupt files somewhere?  If any one has had this issue please share how you rectified it.

Thanks.

I've never seen that behavior either. It could be corruption or just a fluke.

If it were me, I'd get back to the point prior to sending the last sequence (to re-gain the sequence that was overwritten) and move the final sequence to be colored over to a new project and work from there.

Also, make sure there are NO H.264, time remapped or other altered files in the timeline.

We've seen all sorts of issues from sequences sent to Color that were other than vanilla DV, ProRes or DVCProHD files.

Color renders out the files and gives them new names... g_1, g_2...and so on. If some of them are exactly the same length as another one that's labelled g_1...FCP could connect it to the wrong one and whammo, your issue.

The REEL numbers should transfer. But if your footage doesn't have reel numbers, then it will link by name and length often.  Yeah...messed up.

And if your footage doesn't have reel numbers, you can assign them reel numbers in the browser.  Was always an issue with Media Manager, didn't realize it was an issue with Color also.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I just selected the clips I new I was going to use in the final sequence and started new.  I didnt have time to continue to mess with it at that time.  Anyway, thanks again.

Thanks for the suggestion.  The files were converted from h.264 to prores.

the footage didn't have reel numbers.  I primarily use FCP X, but when I freelance I have to use 7.  I can't get them to make the leap.  I've gotten so use to X that going back to 7 I realize how much more nuances there are to keep track of when organizing files.

I don't know if that was the issue, but that could be a viable explenation as to why this issue presented itself.  Thanks for the input.
