Q: Why kernel panic when connecting to DHCP/Thunderbolt-Ethernet and Bluetooth Trackpad?

Colleagues,

Since installation of Mavericks, I have had daily kernel panics. It is the same each time.

The panic occurs (only) shortlyt after connecting with Thunderbolt/Ethernet to my campus DHCP server *AND* when reconnecting my Bluetooth Apple trackpad.

The Crash Report begins as:

    Same post, more info

Today's kernel panic was like others, but I kept WiFi connected, re-connected all of my Bluetooth assessories, *before* I switched to Thunderbolt/Ethernet DHCP.

The freeze/panic occurred after about 10 sec. Probably as services were being re-established.

    Very frustrating.

BTW, once the MBP is connected via Thunderbolt/Ethernet (and after a reboot), then the machine functions well, without further issues.

The problems occur upon switching from WiFi to Thunderbolt/Ethernet

I have exactly the same problem.

But what is really funny: Only at my home. I can connect via thunderbolt adapter with the network of one of my customer without any problems.

    MBPro Retina 2012.

    Hi,

Im having the same problem, but with an original USB- ethernet adapter. The computer start to increase its CPU activity to 200% in a minute and then the lovely kernel panic arrives. Is there an official way to let apple know about this?

This line stands out to me…

    last unloaded kext at 48088490123001: com.apple.driver.AppleUSBCDC          4.2.1b2 (addr 0xffffff7f869b4000, size 16384)

The same last unloaded kext in RolfSH's and _Matteo_'s crash report

I don't know of the significance, but it seems odd that both are crashing after unloading that kext?

Search around for other crash logs with the text ' last unloaded com.apple.driver.AppleUSBCDC'.

It's a little too deep for my knoweldge but I'd suggest you gather the reports & submit them to Apple.

    http://apple.com/feedback

I'm unsure how to submit full crash reports unless you get the prompt after a restart (always send the report).

I would try to replicate it in Safe mode (it may not work at all due to the limited system kexts).

    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455

Also try in another user account to rule out your login items (make a new one in System Prefs > Users & groups).

_Matteo_ your VirtualBox install looks 12 months out of date judging by it's kext version string. It is a goods idea to look at ALL the items loading at the system level & ensuring they are up to date.

EtreCheck is good for that task.

After connecting the ethernet directly to the computer (prior to this I was using the ethernet port of one of the thunderbolt displays) I have no more system-crashes. I hope the others also find a workaround.

I have the exact same issue, and it happens virtually every time that I plug in my ethernet connection via thunderbolt connector. This particular machine is new, and so was always a Mavericks device. Hence, I have no before/after (OS upgrade) data, just that it's annoying. I am somewhat relieved that I am not the only person seeing this.

Is there any combination that works? Such as connecting the adapter then connecting the ethernet lead.

Does safe mode make any difference?

Did you use Migration Assistant to bring over user & app data, or is it totally new?

In my case, it is a totally new device (MacBook Pro Retina 15" - 2GHz Intel Core i7), and I avoided Migration Assistant not wanting to inherit any funky legacy junk. I have not done safe mode, as this is more annoyance than showstopper...unless and until I conclude that this is a hardware issue. I am guessing it's software or ROM.

    Thanks for the note, BTW.

    Update:

As a work-around, I have been avoiding panics by:

    1) Never simultaneously connecting via WiFi and vis Thunderbolt/Ethernet

    2) When switching from WiFi to Thunderbolt/en: first switch off all network services, second, wait about 30 sec; Finally switch on Thunderbolt/en and plug in.

So far, no panics in about 1 week

Anyone know if Apple has acknowledged this issue and/or if there has been any progress on this? I probably get 2 kernel panics per month. Glad I've found the right thread, but disappointed in Apple that there is no resolution in 6+ months.

Apple isn't that quick these days when it comes to resolving issues. At least that is my experience. I own a Late 2013 rMBP 15" 2.3GHz/16GB/512SSD (Mavericks only) and I've seen KP's about twice a week. I reinstalled a fresh copy of Mavericks 10.9.2 and started adding software, at that time I didn't realise the Thunderbolt/Ethernet adaptor could be the problem. After the last KP today, I realised it always occurs when this adaptor is connected so I found this topic.

I know I will use WiFi only for a month or so to see if the KP's stay away. If so, I'll probably get the Airport Extreme 2013 model so I can use fast WiFi transfers without the adaptor hassle.
