Q: why does an upgrade for OS delete music off my imac?

This has happened to me twice now.  The past two times i upgraded the OS, it deleted my music off the guest account.

Most of this music originated from an old windows based laptop.  But even new music added on the imac disappears.

Why is this happening? and how can we avoid it on future upgrades?

iMac, iOS 7.0.4

Are you sure your music was stored in the guest account? If so, you should know that all files stored in the guest account are deleted when you restart or log off

Always store your files in user accounts or in an external drive, and do not use the guest account unless you have a reason to do that
