Q: MacBook Pro constantly losing wireless connectivity

Hi folks,

Well, I read a ton of posts regarding MacBook Pro wireless networking issues before buying a wireless router last month, and now it's "me too."

Our iBook has no problems whatsoever with dropped connections, but the MBP loses access every few minutes or so. I usually follow a sequence of "Turn AirPort Off"/"Turn Airport On" to cycle the connection, and sometimes this works. It's an almost constant problem. This is a standard configuration MBP.

The router happens to be a D-Link DIR-615, but I've seen enough posts about problems with the Airport Express and MacBook Pros to know it's not the router that's the problem--it's the MacBook Pro (I notice a few similar posts even on the first page of this forum).

Dear Apple: what are you doing about this issue?

Has anyone else somehow resolved this problem? If there was only a couple of posts about this issue, then it might be written off as problems with a specific router, or specific users. But when there's a ton of messages all complaining about the same problem, then it's more likely a significant defect that needs to be fixed by the manufacturer, and won't be fixed by standard troubleshooting procedures of the mundane kind (Tech Support Theater: "Is your router turned on?").

Dear Apple: where are you?

OK. Now this will probably jinx things, but my WiFi mysteriously came up last night and has been working just fine since (802.11n, Ch 161 @270Mbps). I hooked up my MBP to my sound system in the garage, listened to iTunes for a while, closed the lid and brought it in. Put it in the same place as always on the sidebar of my desk, opened it up and started to surf not thinking to plug it in via Ethernet and it surfed. It was a couple of minutes before I realized that it was not hardwired and working. So I was expecting the proverbial dropping of the signal and it didn't. So I started up iTunes and streamed radio and let it sit to see how long it would stay connected. After several hours I got bold and started doing things that normally would kill the connection. So far no matter what I have done on the MBP the connection stayed. I was beginning to think that this is a router related issue. But have read that Mac gear has been known to have connection issues with Netgear equipment. But I have had the R6300 for over a year and the MBP worked great for 4 months before starting to drop. AND then there's the WiFi icon in the menubar showing that there is no hardware installed. So I'm back to the WiFi "card" in these MBP's being "finicky".

I had tried every fix posted on the net and until now, nothing. BUT earlier in the day I power cycled my network, Ubee DDM3513 and Netgear R6300v1, for the thousandth time since this started. The 6300 took a while to grab that Internet connection so I power cycled it again. Finally it latched on. This is something that I have noticed with the 6300v1. I have read of needing to power cycle networks that use an R6300 every two weeks to "refresh" operations. So I have. But lately things have been really wonky, that's why the PC. It wasn't until quite a while later that I discovered the WiFi working. Since the MBP has been down for so long I basically disregard it. But now what a nice surprise. For as long as it lasts. I have backed up the router settings, PDF'd the set up pages in it too so that I have a record of all the settings. And the MBP is as it always is. So . . . . we'll see. I thought that this would never work again and would have to scrap this thing. Guess that's what I get for thinking.

    More as it happens.

'Unacceptable' is a kind word for what this is.  It's a disgrace.

Unless the monetary damage is great enough, nothing will be done.  They surely know about the problem, but it's not 'worth' it for them to fix.  Yes - a disgrace.

This all started for me when I did an Airport Firmware update on my old white MB. I'm not sure if anyone here has tried downgrading to an older version to see if this has fixed their problem. I bought a new MBP and haven't had any issues since.

I am having this very issue starting from 4 days ago!!!

At the beginning my wifi connectivity would drop whenever it woke up from sleep. Turning off the wifi and back on wouldn't help. It cannot find any wifi networks, neither in office or at home. But all other devices were still working at the same time.

Starting from yesterday, my wifi would also stopping working intermittently even without waking up from sleep.

The only way to fix this is to restart the laptop. Sometimes reset the SMC as well. All other methods failed to work.

    APPLE please resolve this issue!!!!!!

This is driving so many people CRAZY!!!!

    I agree.

I have been connecting to the WiFi signal from my Android (yeah, take that! Not an iPhone). Initially, it did not tether well and the connection would constantly drop. I found a suggestion in a user forum, and for the last 8 months it worked fine (can't seem to find that thread now when I need it). Today, the Macbook Pro went cuckoo again. Despite the strongest signal and indicating that WiFi was connected (no "!"), Safari, Chrome and Firefox did not open webpages. Multiple restarts, safe mode + restart, WiFi keychain removal + renaming, WiFi diagnostics - nothing fixed the problem. Finally, I deleted and added the DNS IP again, and it finally connected to the internet. But now, the connection won't hold steady. What do I do?????

I have had this WiFi related problem before, and called the ISP guys like 10 times (you know the ! mark on Airport that drives you insane despite strong WiFi on the router?) and everytime they would test it on a Windows machine and report everything was fine.

F' you Apple. I may love your hardware design but I hate everything about the way you

--ignore the most basic of complaints like the above. Also, why can't you design a better adapter that won't constantly break. Why would you ever price it at USD 80 or something for a replacement?!

--price your products (it is NOT acceptable to convert USD to EUR when the rate is not 1-1) in different countries, blaming import taxes. You don't pay enough taxes in California keeping your money safe in Luxemborg and Ireland.

Get over yourself. Because even someone like me will start walking away.

Me too! but please take action:

    Hi All,

I though it was a "one-person" error, but it seems lots of people have the same problem. I can't believe that this problem has not been addressed. I have been a mac user for a long time but now I am even considering switching back! I think the way to make apple care will be by returning our faulty computers and ask for our money back or a change for a fully functioning computer. And also it would be nice to warn future buyers of the faulty network card, so they can decide to take the risk or not. This is my network interface data, I would advise you to check for this before you buy:

    Interface:

Card Type:          AirPort Extreme  (0x14E4, 0xF5)

      Firmware Version:          Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.106.98.100.22)

I am starting the return process tomorrow. I feel dissapointed.

I have the same problem here in France with my 15.4" mbpr late 2013 that I bought one week ago. Wifi connection drops after about 20 or 30 seconds. So I bought a thunderbolt to ethertnet adapter, and I have exaaaactly the same problem.

I tried all the fixes I saw on the forum on different threads, And it changes nothing.

I have a macpro and my old mbp 17" mid 2009 connected on my local network. The weird thing is that when I connect my late 2013 mbpr he is recognized even if my wifi or ethernet connection doesn't work on worldwide web : I can't use safari that says I'm not connected but I can share files.
I tried to share folders of more than 100go, and it works with my top wifi rates during hours, but still impossible to go to internet -_-

Same problem here. Macbook Pro 17" Late 2008, Macbook Air late 2009, Macbook Pro Retina 13" late 2012. Two of them are running Mavericks, Macbook Air is running 10.6.8. Funny thing is that my "router" is Mac Mini mid 2011, I simple share its internet connection. Macbook Pro Late 2008 seem to be most problem-proof. It drops connection every few hours. The biggest problem is with 13" retina, which drops connection ever 10-20 seconds. The problem appeared since Mac Mini got some efi upgrade.

I think I don't have to tell you how annoying is losing connection every 10-20sec while working on ftp?

Original post here is from 2008!! No one at Apple is getting the message, so this may be the wrong VENUE. Time to start posting the issue on FaceBook and Twitter so that EVERYONE can see the issues we are having. I've already Tweeted about it....so I am asking that EVERYONE START POSTING ON SOCIAL MEDIA where we'll have a larger audience. Tweet people...post to their FaceBook page!! Someone at Apple will get the message to the people who need to know...it's pointless to be complaining here. All we are doing is growing our own audience with no guest speaker.
