Q: Restore iPhone from older backup

Hello,

Let me start out by saying thank you for viewing and I hope you can help!  I have searched support and haven't found anything that has helped.

Last night I did a normal backup and sync with no problems.  Today I noticed that I lost all of my text messages.  I don't think it was from when I synced, I actually tried to send a mms and I don't ever remember it going through.  In support I have read that people sending mms have had the the screen go white and the text mesages disappear.

I also read that I can restore from a backup.  I tried that and no luck, the text messages that were listed only showed 2 from last night and none from this morning so I know that the backup worked but the last backup must have been after this issue happened.  What I need is the backup BEFORE last nights.  I would much rather lose a couple weeks of text verses 3 years of text.

I wish it was as simple as "select the next one in the list" but it's not.  The other file names listed are my husbands iPhone and 4 other files that all have dates of 2009 and older.  I sync at least once a month.  Where are they and I how do I restore to one from at least this year?

Please help!

Thanks

    Hi

Just to be certain u got it right, because XP has e previous version function.

E right click properties should be of/on e backup folder, not inside e folder. Ie u have to be in e mobile sync folder, right click on back up.

    Hope it works!

When I click on Properties, the only three tabs I get are General, Sharing, and Customize. I tried getting rid of all the files associated with the most recent backup, the blank one, and I tried using only the one before that, but it didn't work. The strange thing is that my phone says my most recent sync was the older one. This is frustrating.

But when your iPhone was stolen, or lost the contacts of iPhone due to no backup, what can you do to retrieve the lost contacts on iPhone?

iPhone Contact Recovery can recover the lost or deleted contacts in easy ways. Besides recovering contacts from iTunes backups, iPhone Contact Recovery can also help to scan and retrieve contacts from your iPhone 5S/5/4S/4/3GS directly without backup. However, the precaution is that your iPhone is available and can be connected to your computer. You can check detailed steps in this article: How to recover contacts from iPhone on Mac and Windows computer

Hey all, so i have read all posts but this is my situation: i needed to restore my phone from a previous back up that wasn't listed when i go to File > Devices > Restore from previous backup

It was however listed when i went to:  Edit in itunes > Preferences > 'Device' section > Device Backups.

As this was very frustrating, i did the following (NOTE: only do this if you don't have anything on your phone currently that you don't want to loose):

Checked the app data folder listed in previous replys and found my older back up file that i need to restore from was there.

I then went back into itunes and deleted the most recent back up from the homescreen of itunes. Now the older back up that i need to use was the second most recent so i didn't need to delete any more but if you need an older one you will need to delete more backups until you have the backup you want at the start of the list.

    I then restored my phone.

Once i restored my phone, itunes treated it like a new phone and when it first recognises the phone it will ask if you want to set up as new or restore using back up.

Now when i did this because i had deleted  the back up which was at the start of the list (empty back up of the previously restored phone), the back up i needed was listed as the most recent back up (with all my files).

I then chose to restore phone using this back up and everything i needed was restored.

IMPORTANT: Because itunes only shows and allows you to restore the most recent back up, you must delete all the back up files until you get to the one you really need.

Hope this gets everyones files back as it has mine!

iTunes has a nasty habit of deleting the previous backup every time it does a backup. If you really have an old backup intact, there is a way to restore from it. I forget the procedure, but I'm sure you can Google it. It's a good idea to manually go into your backup directory and manually copy it over to a new name once in a while. That way iTunes won't touch it, and you can use it in an emergency such as yours.

Before a sync or restore, I believe that iTunes will create a backup of your phone's contents (unless you manually cancel this backup). The backup will contain the photos and videos that were on the phone.

You can check if a backup was created by doing the following:

    Launch iTunes
    iTunes > Preferences > Devices
See if there is an entry with the date of the restore.
If a backup exists, you can recover your data with one of two methods:

Restore your phone using that backup; or
Use an application such as iPhone Backup Extractor to extract the contacts out of the backup file

My new iphone 5 automatically synced to itunes when I plugges it in.  Which means, my new phone made a new backup in itunes.  Nothing was on the phone basically.  How do I get to my previous backup that I did on my iphone 5 from yesterday?  it only shows the latest backup that was done.

I lost my iPhone yesterday, and the insurance company had a new one in my hands in 24 hours!  Sadly, when I went to restore a backup version of my lost phone, that version was not available.  I could see the backup in iTunes>Preferences>Devices, but it was not selectable in iTunes.

Turns out, I was being boneheaded about doing the update to the new phone, and this was keeping me from accessing that backup.

So: I did the stupid update.  Voila - backup available now.

And now my messages are back, and my calendar!  And everything else!

In conclusion: if you're reluctant to do every single stupid update for any reason, that may be why you can't access some backups.

    Boom.

It seems that I only have one backup present the backup folder, and the 'previous versions' feature is not enabled.

To all other windows users - do you guys think I can revert to an earlier version of my backup by using using Windows restore?

I was also trying to get to an older backup of my iPhone using Time Machine.  Didn't work. Even though I restored my desktop to a prior date that I knew would have been the right timing for the older backup, iTunes was still showing the date of the most recent backup.  So, it does appear that iTunes backups are NOT saved as separate incremental backups in Time Machine.
