I got both of mine to the Covent garden store, they are both yellow on the left of the screen

And yes, I stood in store comparing mine to the display models!

How does this look? For a few days I thought I had a bit of yellow tint on the left hand side, portrait mode. But it also might be angles. Here are a few pics in complete darkness and in some light. iPad Air vs. iPhone 5, both at 100% brightness.CIMG4205.JPGCIMG4206.JPGCIMG4211.JPGCIMG4213.JPG

    Convincing images.

The iPhone 5 has very good, consistent color; with the the iPad Air - I'm not sure if I see "yellow" per se, but it's almost as if the screen is underlit. The Air needs brighter LEDs, or more of them. The fault is especially noticeable with whiter fields.

This suggests that insufficient LEDs may at least constribute to the dissatisfaction of some users. The problem is: a brighter monitor often means a battery that depletes more quickly, and Apple is wedded to the notion that a tablet must have a battery life of ten hours.

The thing is that in an Apple Store and because of the powerful light this difficult to see the screen defects. And usually you will discover them at home.

SebMac32: what is the production week of your iPad Air and Serial number start?

Below my iPad Air vs my iPad Mini (not retina) pics. But always difficult to show a true overview of a screen via a pic because it depends on the current light, the camara and its setting, etc.

My current iPad mini has an even screen (i.e. no issue with yellow tint or anything).

    What do you think?

After using it for 3 days now, it looks completely fine to me........especially compared to what I see others have. My pics above look worse in thumbnail view, when you actually click on them and enlarge them, the screen looks fairly even....... My batch is (DMPLD) not sure what production week it is.........And one other thing, after the 3 days the little yellow i saw day one is mostly gone....and not a placebo effect, I took pics and compared.....so who knows....

Ok so I found the site that deciphers the iPad serian number. So mine is:

    Production week: 37 (September)

    Factory: DM (China - Foxconn)

you can all check here: http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html

Well the good news is I finally got a perfect iPhone 5S after playing display roulette for the past two months. Unfortunately, my ipad arrived at my building literally 15 minutes after I left for the airport for thanksgiving vacation. I'm crossing my fingers that it's a good one though so when I get back I can be done being stuck in the replacement loop. From the pictures I'm seeing it looks like they are getting better...

I also don't think the yellow issue has anything to do with the backlighting. The only place where the backlighting is uneven is on the left edge where we typically see the book spine effect. However, I don't think that this may be caused entirely by the backlight LEDs anyway. That would suggest that apple designed the ipad with an asymmetrical backlight LED layout which would make absolutely no sense. As long as the backlighting is symmetrical, it shouldn't have any dark edges or anything. If it did, it would have symmetrical dark edges, and it does not.

It must have something to do with the angle of the LCD or the translucence of the screen itself. It would likely explain both the yellow and the book spine shadow issues.

The most important is to feel happy with his iPad so if you think that your iPad provides a good screen that's fine and this is the most important !

Actually when I'm checking intensively mine I think that there is a small area in the bottom left part of the screen where I can see a slight yellow tint. The best way to see it is when I'm using the keyboard in Safari. I can see the different tints between the left keys and the rights ones. So if I compare the key 'A' with the key 'L' I can see the difference.

Not dramatic but we'll I would except the same quality between as I have on my iPad mini or iPhone 5 at least.

I'll see  with the Apple Store a swap with a new one but I'm not sure anymore if I'll get a correct screen. Looks like to be the lottery :(.

"That would suggest that apple designed the ipad with an asymmetrical backlight LED layout which would make absolutely no sense"

Most mobile devices only have LED's down one edge, the diffuser spreads out the backlight, there isnt usualy a need to have lighting from two edges

Following up on my previous post, I did get a replacement from the apple Store. Two geniuses insisted they had never heard of the problem before, and one inisisted mine was his first Air return. The new unit is overall warmish but more even than the previous one. Notably the book spine or bookbinding effect is not evident on this one, although some milder left side unevenness is evident.

In looking at the store demo units it is clear all of those units have the cooloer blue/white color balance, which I much prefer to warmer. Still what does one do? Return an otherwise acceptable screen in hopes of getting a cooler color temp that is also evenly lit?

I am not sure what to make of the signals Apple employees were giving off about it. I was struck by the fact that neither genius scrutinized the display at all to evaluate it for themselves. I showed it to each for perhaps three seconds, and neither even voiced a judgment. I gather since this was an appointment made by an Apple Senior Advisor approving "repair" my case was already flagged for a swap out without further evaluation.

Docchris: did you manage to get a better screen? Or do you still have the yellow tint issue?
