Q: cannot turn on DNS in OS X Server v 3

what are the main causes that make it impossible to turn on the DNS service on the Server app (version 3). I don't see anything wrong...

    Wish I knew myself, I'm having this same problem since the upgrade. Turn it on, and it immediatly turns back off.

     

    This seems to happen in the log, when trying to turn it on. Issue seems to be that it can't write to the the clientPID? Maybe doing something similar on yours.. though not sure what to do about it.

    Upgrading thankfully fixed several of my server problems. This seems to be the only one it caused though.

    That's not the DNS service log, but it does show that the Mail service is misconfigured and that you have a malfunctioning third-party backup process.

    I too have the same problem - have not been able to solve it yet but when I run the fullstatus command I get:

    I'm a novice sysadmin - this is my home server that I run a basic Wiki from for my company.  Since the update to server 3 / mavericks the Wiki has run slower than an asmatic snail!  The only thing that I can see is the DNS setting would not switch on.

    We had the same problem.

    We did a clean installation of Mavericks client and then Server 3.0.1.

    After setting up as a new server DNS started to work fine.

     

    But, most important, VPN still not working. Someone posted that the problem is L2TP.

    But it is not the case, in fact starting VPN L2TP from iPad 3G it works fine.

    Therefore the issue must be Mavericks clients to Mavericks Server not L23TP itself.

     

    I wish Apple and related developers who had a pre-releases of OS X supposed to discover all this before they released a new Server app and Mavericks itself.

    I was having problems on initial install with DNS partially working and the server Host Names changing.  Not sure what caused the problem, but this fixed the situation for me--

     

    Launch Server App  and check in the "Overview" tab for the server the Host Name and the Computer Name.

     

    The Host Name should be the fully qualified domain name for you server - example: servername.domain.com

    The Computer Name should be just that:   example:  servername

     

    In my case the Host Name was blank.  Click Edit... to the right and go through the steps to correct the server name.  Make sure the Network is you external IP address if your server is using a routable IP address.

     

    It took a long time to get responses for each step in this process on my MacMini test system, so be patient if you have the same slow response time.  After the corrections were completed, a pop up window appeared asking if I wished to "correct" the DNS settings, which I agreed to.  After that all works well.

     

    I don't know why the machine didn't like the DNS that was inherited from the Mountain Lion Server that was migrated to Mavericks Server.  In looking at the setting in DNS all looked well and web pages loaded just fine.

     

    Maybe this might help if you have the same symptoms for your "Host Name" missing in the Overview of Server App.

    Hi Paul,

    yes we had exactly the same problem when we updated from Mountain Lion + Server to Mavericks + Server.

    Talking on the phone with Apple they admitted thay already had similar situation, therefore a clean Mavericks client +Server was the best solution, and we did.

    After the clean installation the Server setup was fine and DNS regularly working (also confirmed using Terminal with the command "sudo changeip - checkhostname").

    We can use the server machine to browse web, share files, etc.

    The issue is still on VPN.

    Apple posted (I don't remember the link) that the new server may have problem with L2TP suggesting to use PPT (which of course is not a best choice).

    By the way using other Mavericks clients outside the network its is impossible to connect to the server with L2TP, but, what we found strange is that using an iPad with 3G, the VPN connection is possible with L2TP protocol.

    This make me believe that, as other people posted, the issue must be between Mavericks clients to Mavericks server.

    Yesterday I saw in the news that Apple has distributed to developers the new Mavericks 9,1 release and among the improvements it is listed the VPN issue

    I think this is the link from Apple you'e referring to.

    Also, it's not just Mac Maverick client machines unable to connect outside of the Server NAT gateway. My iPhone can't connect via LTE using L2TP outside of my LAN. Only PPTP works with my iPhone.
