    OK

Your copy of iCal is currently attached to 2 different calendars, iCloud (which you are not using) and Gmail (which you are using) that is why the iCloud website is empty and the Gmail website has your calendar.

Which of the 2 calendars would you prefer to have your events?

well I prefer both but I suppose that is not possible...so I may have to go with gmail as it is also a work related calendar... I thought the ical that shares with google would also show up on iCloud as part of iCal...

    sorry to seem so difficult

If you use both iCloud and Gmail for the same calendar you will have duplicates (in iCal) most people do not want duplicate events, are you sure you do?

iCal does not 'share', it is a calendar client, you have 2 calendars attached, you can have many more if you wish but they are independent calendars, (you just happen to be looking at more than one of them at a time in iCal), and as your iCloud calendar is empty it all looks OK.

Go to iCal>Preferences>General and check which one is the 'Default', I'll guess that it is Gmail, and if that is the one you are going to use it should be the default.

Do you synchronize your Google calendar to any other clients? (iPhone etc)

yes I sync and share with phone and with my partner's calendar..he uses iCal..

So what I see on google and iCal are the same...I thought I could also view the events on iCloud...but it is not necessary for me to use icloud calendar

Please understand that this is nothing to do with iCal (except as a viewer) you could use any client you wished (SoHo, Fantastical, even Outlook for Windows) and if they had the same accounts attached they would show the same calendars. Do you understand that the actual calendar is not on your Mac? it is on Googles server, you get a cached copy locally when you view it.

Although you could copy events to both calendars I do not recommend it, you will get duplications and the whole thing becomes complex (more complex).

You are making the correct choice, choose 1 of the 2, functionally there is little difference between them

(but I detest Googles policy of selling your private data to interested buyers, therefore I would not have chosen Gmail's calendar)

thank you so much for your help and patience...

the events that I put on iCal will not show up on iCloud because google is the default calendar...

    is that statement correct?

Yes, that statement is exactly correct, if you change the default to iCloud the reverse would happen, events in iCloud, but not Gmail.

Think of it like a Condo, many residents, independent domiciles

    And you're welcome.

Csound 1, we just handed to my 9th grader an old (1st Gen?) iPod Touch.  She also works on an old iMac (Snow Leopard), and thus, both are incapable of iCloud.  She has a gmail account and google calendar abilities.  Is there a way she can be invited to and join an iCloud/iCal calendar that my wife and I use on our Mavericks and iOS 7 devices?  All the stuff I see out there seems to go the other way--having a google calendar that you then share with iCal.  We need to share an established  iCal calendar with her, potentially through her google calendars/e-mail address.  Thanks for any help!
