Q: Wifi disconnects after sleep and takes long time to reconnect with Mavericks

Since upgrading to Mavericks whenever my MacBook Air goes to sleep (if I leave it idle) the wifi disconnects and it can take up to a minute to reconnect when it wakes.

Basically what happens is, as soon as it wakes I have no internet connection, the WiFi indicator is pulsing, meaning it is searching for networks, but it takes ages to find any, then after some time, usually between 30 secs and a minute all the networks in my building pop up and it instantly at that point reconnects to my WiFi network.

It is incredibly frustrating I was so used to the Mac being an instant on tool, now it takes longer to get on the internet than booting up my windows PC.

Any ideas what might have caused this?

Same problem here and it's driving me nuts.

Turning off Bluetooth is not a solution - it is a ridiculous compromise.

If I turn wifi off and then on again, it will reconnect quickly, but this is a pain ita to have to do this every time.

Come on Apple, sort this out.

    You might try a

Kinivo BTD-300 Bluetooth 3.0 USB adapter - For Windows 8 / Windows 7 / Windows XP / Vista, Mac OS 10.3.9 or Later

You might try a bluetooth adapter for one of your usb ports to bypass the mac bluetooth antenna and setup.

You can get it for about $13 from Amazon and return it for full refund in 30 days if it doesn"t work. A lot faster solution probably than waiting for a new software fix. It may even be a problem not fixable as on the Macbook Air's where it is the contiguity of the antennas - that's why I have a Macbook 13"

I use blutooth peripherals, and Mike's solution is the only one that worked for me without disabling bluetooth. (Moving wifi to first in the "Serivce Order" in Network prefs as he explains). You rock Mike. Now everything works perfectly, no more wifi problems when waking from sleep.

While I agree that turning off the Bluetooth is an unacceptable compromise, it *does* work. I'm not happy with the solution, but since I don't use Bluetooth frequently and I use WiFi constantly, it's worth it to me to not have to be infuriated every time I open the lid on my MBP.

I've found that turning off my bluetooth fixes the issue too. Something about the bluetooth in making the wifi act up when the computer wakes up. This is really annoying since I use bluetooth to connect my keyboard and trackpad at work...

I've also tried resetting SMC and PRAM. Did not work.

I suggested on another post that they try the cheap USB Bluetooth plugins from amazon - $12 - 14 to run their peripherals. I don't have that problem but the same solution with a wifi USB dongle solved the macair's problem.

Yeah I almost wonder if it has something to do with the setting that allows your computer to wake from the activity of a Bluetooth device. I'll test it a little and reply again if I figure anything out.

I am amazed at how patient and forbidding are some Apple customers. How can some people even consider to use an external bluetooth adaptor to bypass a bug like this in a premium computer?

Apple, please fix this bug urgently! Have some consideration with your customers and put some extra dollars in making the bug-free systems everyone expects from Apple. Or at least, do provide quick fixes! This is quite annoying.

    OK,

I called apple support and they fixed my Macbook Air 2012, running Maverick with regards to the problem where WiFi doesn't reconnect after you put it to sleep and you have bluetooth on and paired with a device.

Click on the "Finder" in the lower left corner or double click on the Hard Drive Icon (Finder window opens)

Click once on the "Macintosh HD"

    Click once on "Library"

    Click once on "Preferences"

Click, hold and Drag "System Configuration" to the Trash

    Restart Computer

(your System Configuration folder will rebuild)

Make sure WiFi and Bluetooth are turned on after the restart!

    See Pic below...

    Hope this helps,

    Mike

OK, back on the phone with Apple....  the above post seemed to work and then stopped...

They had me reset the SMU and again it seems to work now....   I'll test it and repost if it fails again...

    Turn your computer off,

Leave the power connector connected to your laptop

press and hold down the "Control", "Option", "Shift" and then also press and hold the "power on" button all at once for 10 seconds...

OK, back on the phone with Apple for the 3rd time....

Anyway, it's still not fixed.  The Apple person sent me a file that I ran which captured the system data files with exact times and he could see that WiFi did not connect but didn't have an answer.  What he's doing is escaluating it to the engineers and will call back next Wednesday.

Ed from Apple support called me back last evening and asked if I coud try a completly different network so I drove over to Starbucks.

Well, everything worked fine at Starbucks, which is a nonsecure network.  I even turned WiFi and Bluetooth off, restarted the computer, had it sleep from 1 min to 10 min's and it hooked right up to the WiFi with Bluetooth on.

My Macbook Air is the only one running Maverick at home...   We have 1 orig. iPad, 1 iPad 3, iMac 17" flat panel (too old to run the newer O/S) and an iMac that lookes like a half of a bowling ball with a articulating flat screen (also too old to run the newer O/S) and they all work fine.

So I'll repost after Mr. Ed calls back next week....   I did mention to him about the many people having the same problem and he said that he hasn't received anything from engineering yet with regard to the problem or any patch yet.

There must be thousands of people with the same problem, where a MacBookAir (mine is mid2012 model) has problems with wifi reconnecting after sleep with Maverick. You just need to google it.

    It is quite frustrating.

Mike, thanks for your help trying to find a fix. Apple should pay for your time and effort to help them fix this, by the way.

Next time you speak to Ed, please ask him to read this thread and to google this problem.

So far this is working for me, many thanks. Sure wish Apple would figure this out.
