You can still use the old shadow and highlight tool in Aperture. It's a single extra click.

Thanks, Terence, I'll look into it.

Thanks to all who have taken an interest in this.

I still hope Apple will take heed and fix iPhoto.  The old shadow recovery tool was really really good.  (The new highlight recovery tool seems OK, by the way).

I have noted with interest Aplle's claim to have a new, improved higlight and shadow correction tool in Aperture.

A look at their own supposed example shows that it is no such thing.

The picture of the man and girl in the grassy field shows how the shadow correction takes a nice azure sky and turns it cyan.

    Rubbish, Apple, absolute rubbish.

Further to this post, here's a comparison between, first, the before/after photo from the Aperture website, and, secondly, a crop of the left-hand (before) photo, shadow-corrected using Photoshop Elements version 6 (so obsolete).

It's clear that Aperture's shadow tool is well behind the game.   iPhoto displays the same behaviour.   whatsnew_highlights_2x.jpgwhatsnew_highlights_2xcropps.jpg

And do you have a question on iPhoto for the Mac that the volenteer users here can assist you with?
