Q: Ethernet AND wifi suddenly stopped working

After working normally for years my Powermac G5 running 10.5.8 suddenly stopped connecting to the internet, both wirelessly and via ethernet.  The hardware is not the problem as another fresh instal boot patrition on the same machine works OK, and other devices connect to the router both via cable and wifi.

I'm totally baffled as to why this would suddenly affect both means of connection at the same time.  I've spent literally days trawling these forums and elsewhere on the web and tried every suggested fix, all without success (scrapping preferences, setting up new locations, etc).  Although I get the "self-assigned IP address" messages for both ethernet and wireless in the network configuration occasionally, none of the fixes for this issue have worked.

I'm really at the end of my tether.  Migration Assistant doesn't properly restore the settings and authorisations for the dozens of applications on the original boot drive to a fresh instal - trying to resolve that would take more days (and possibly some expense) so isn't really an option.

All ideas gratefully anticipated!

    Hi, have you tried this?

Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712

    10.5, 10.6, 10.7 & 10.8…

System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.

    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x/10.8.x instructions...

System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.

The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.

    If using Wifi/Airport...

Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

    208.67.222.222

    208.67.220.220

(There may be better or faster DNS numbers in your area, but these should be a good test).

    Click OK.

Thanks for the reply BDA.  I'm not able to test this immediatelly (the G5 is at my mother's) but will certainly give it a go.  I remember spending some time deleting all existing locations (including associated preference files) and trying to create new ones without success, but don't think I tried using specific DNS numbers.  Thanks!
